POINT OF INTEREST

Cerrito del Carmen

Guatemala City, Central Highlands

A small park with a big view, Cerrito del Carmen is a popular lookout point over Guatemala City and the surrounding landscape. This hilltop site is also home to the colonial-era Cerrito del Carmen Church—one of the oldest churches in the city.

The basics

A visit to Cerrito del Carmen is a must for history lovers and a highlight of some Guatemala City sightseeing tours. While many visitors come to see the historic church, you can also spend time meandering along winding nature trails or lingering on shaded benches. Notably, the park offers one of the best vista points over Guatemala City. Go on a clear day to take in the view of the sprawling neighborhoods and the mountains beyond.

Things to know before you go

  • Though it's in Zone 1, near many of Guatemala City’s most popular attractions, Cerrito del Carmen is often overlooked by travelers—so it’s truly a local gem.
  • The church is open to the public, but doesn’t have posted visitor hours. The only time entry is guaranteed is during Sunday morning services.
  • Parking at the top of the hill is limited. If no spaces are available, you may have to drive down the hill and walk back up.
  • Cerrito del Carmen is not wheelchair accessible due to its steps, unpaved trails, and cobblestones.

How to get there

From Mercado Colón, walk north on 12 Avenida for about 15 minutes and you’ll be there. You can also take the Transmetro line 6 to the Cerrito del Carmen stop or line 18 to La Merced. If you visit as part of a guided tour, transportation is likely included.

When to get there

Head to Cerrito del Carmen anytime during the day that you need a respite from the city’s bustling streets. On Sundays, you’ll see the historic church in action. Join for services or stay to enjoy the occasional entertainers and food vendors who cater to after-church crowds.

The legend of Cerrito del Carmen

Cerrito del Carmen dates back to the 17th century, making it more than 100 years older than Guatemala City itself. According to oral tradition, it was founded by a Spanish pilgrim who came to Guatemala with a statue of the Virgin of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Because of the site’s historic and religious importance, the church was rebuilt twice, after the earthquakes of both 1917 and 1976.
