POINT OF INTEREST

Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens

3755 W. Seminole Blvd., Sanford, Florida

Filled with species from across the world—as well as those native to Florida—the Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens are home to everything from leopards and alligators to butterflies and ferns. Take pictures of the majestic animals and delicate plants, or get into the action by feeding a giraffe or meeting a rhino.

Weave your way through the network of animal enclosures, visit the reptile house, and discover the surrounding plants on a self-guided tour of the zoo. Time your trip so it coincides with a “keeper chat,” and learn about the animals’ behavior and habitats from those who know them best. Mix up your day of adventures by riding a train, carousel, or zipline, then cool off in the splash zone.

To save time at the entrance, buy your ticket online in advance. If you want to join an educational tour or activity, you must book two weeks in advance (online, or by phone or email).

  • The Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens are a must for animal and plant lovers.

  • Paved and wooden boardwalks make the zoo easily accessible to wheelchairs and strollers, and wheelchairs and wagons are available to rent.

  • Purchase food at the zoo’s concession, or take your own lunch and eat at the free picnic area.

Located in Sanford, the zoo is a 25-minute drive north of Orlando. Follow I-4 E north from Orlando, take exit 104, and turn left onto Highway 17-19. You’ll find the zoo on your right. On-site parking is free.

The zoo is open daily from 9am to 5pm. Check the online schedule for activities and demos. Many of the zoo’s experiences and special events happen only on weekends. If you just want to see the animals and plants, go on a weekday to avoid the crowds.

Wildlife enthusiasts can make the most of their time at the zoo by participating in a variety of fun and educational activities. Meet a rhino up close, observe the patterns and feeding habits of exotic and native animals, feed giraffes, and learn about the challenges facing many of the zoo’s species. Animal encounters cost extra and must be booked in advance.
