POINT OF INTEREST

Casino Baden-Baden

Kaiserallee 1, Baden-Baden

German starlet Marlene Dietrich described this old-school gambling joint as “the most beautiful casino in the world.” Renowned for its Belle Epoque-era glamor, the Casino Baden Baden is housed in a 19th-century palace (the Kurhaus) and still offers blackjack, poker, and roulette in a luxurious hall festooned with chandeliers and inspired by the Palace of Versailles.

If gambling’s not your thing, there’s no need to worry. You can take a guided tour of the casino, which is usually 40 minutes. Not only will you get to hear about the surprising French origins of the 200-year-old establishment, but you’ll also get a behind-the-scenes peek at some of the action—no bets needed. For anyone interested in gambling, expect to pay an admission fee for the classic games while access to the slot machines is free.

  • The Baden Baden Casino is wheelchair-accessible, making it an excellent option for visitors with disabilities or limited mobility.

  • Casual dressers, be warned: There’s a strict dress code to enter the premises as a gambler, including a shirt and tie for men.

  • Traveling light? The casino can provide you with appropriate attire for a small fee. The dress code doesn’t apply to the guided tour.

  • Gamblers must be 21 or older according to German law. You’ll also need a passport or other identity document to get access to the casino’s games or slots.

  • Photographs are allowed during the guided tour.

  • There’s an on-site restaurant, The Grill in the Casino Baden Baden, that specializes in sushi and beef, and is open for dinner. Reservations are recommended. Anyone dining at the Grill gets free admission to the casino.

Baden-Baden is an easy day trip from many locations in Germany and France, including Stuttgart (about 1.5 hours by car) and Strasbourg (1 hour). Visitors with their own transport can easily find garage parking near the casino. Otherwise, the casino’s central location means it’s within walking distance of most Baden-Baden attractions, including the Caracalla Therme and the Fabergé Museum.

If you’re looking to hit the roulette table or try your luck at slots, you’ll typically be able to access the casino from late morning or afternoon until the early hours of the morning. Anyone who prefers to visit on a guided tour should consult the website for an up-to-date schedule. The casino also hosts musical concerts, so check the event calendar while planning your visit. If you come for Christmas, you’ll get to see the main gambling hall decked out in its Yuletide best.

Legend has it that the German actress Marlene Dietrich’s favorite cocktail was made up of Canadian whiskey and orange curaçao. While you’re not likely to find that unique combination in Baden Baden, you can still practice drinking like a diva. The town is famed for its rooftop and riverside bars, which are especially lively in summer. Grab a beer or mixed drink and mingle like it’s 1920.
