Casa Herradura Tequila Distillery

Doña Gabriela Pena Lozada 405, Amatitan, Jalisco

Established in 1870, the family-run Casa Herradura hacienda sits on the outskirts of Amatitán, a village near Guadalajara in the heart of Mexico’s tequila country. Explore the vast Casa Herradura Distillery, a major player in the Mexican tequila scene; sample its wares; and take in the area’s natural beauty.

On a Casa Herradura tour discover the secrets of tequila production, from harvesting and crushing the agaves to the fine art of fermentation and distillation. A master tequilier guides you through a tasting of the different varieties produced on site, from the premium 100 percent agave blanco (white) and añejo (aged) tequilas that are sold under the Herradura name, to popular mixed blends like El Jimador and New Mix.

To avoid the hassle of driving, join a tour departing from Guadalara. Many day-trip packages with round-trip transportation stop at the distillery, as well as the town of Tequila, for more tastings. Or, catch a ride on the Tequila Herradura Express; its historic railway route is set against a backdrop of blue agave fields and sweeping mountains. Tickets are included in some tour options.

  • Casa Herradura is ideal for returning visitors to Mexico’s tequila country who want to experience a new destination, or for first-timers on a tight schedule.

  • Customizable, English-language tour options are offered at Casa Herradura, and a company store is located on-site.

  • Many travelers choose to combine a visit to Casa Herradura with a trip to Tequila.

From Guadalajara the most popular way to reach Casa Herradura is via the Tequila Herradura Express train. But, you also can reach the distillery in around an hour by public bus. Head to the Old Bus Station (Central Vieja) and look for buses labeled “Amatitán.” Alternatively, book a tour that includes round-trip transportation.

Casa Herradura is closed on Mondays; English-language tours are offered three times daily from Tuesday to Sunday. Booking in advance is recommended but not necessary. Travelers who don’t do well with baking heat may fare better by visiting during winter, although crowds will be fewer in the down season from June to September.

Casa Herradura, with its traditional haciendas and comprehensive tasting tours, is the main draw of Amatitán. However, take some time before or after your excursion to wander the dusty streets of this tiny town, take photos in the emblematic agave fields, or stop by another Amatitán distillery, Tres Mujeres.
