Cape Wheel
Breakwater Boulevard, V&A Waterfront, Cape Town
Located at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront (V&A Waterfront), the Cape Wheel offers panoramic views of Table Mountain, Robben Island, Pearl Mountain, and the Cape Town skyline from 131 feet (40 meters) up. Built in 2010 for the FIFA World Cup, the wheel offers 30 fully enclosed cabins (or gondolas), with room for up to six adults each.
A ride on the Cape Wheel offers some of the best views of Cape Town. Standard rides include four rotations on the wheel and take around 15 minutes. You can spend twice as long in the air with an extended Sky Dining picnic ride, which lasts about 30 minutes. VIP rides are also available, and include appetizers, a bottle of sparkling wine, and music in a special cabin with tinted windows, leather seats, and a glass floor.
- The Cape Wheel is great for first-time visitors to Cape Town.
- The enclosed cabins are climate controlled and include air conditioning.
- Children ages 4 and under ride for free, while children up to 17 receive a discount.
- Guests must fill their own picnic baskets for the Sky Dining picnic ride.
- Two wheelchair-accessible cabins are available.
The V&A Waterfront is at the foot of Signal Hill, around 20 minutes by car from Cape Town International Airport. There is plenty of parking available nearby, but you can also take the red line of the city sightseeing bus and get off at stop 2. A MyCiTi bus stop is located along the water, at Breakwater Blvd.
The Cape Wheel is open every day of the week, including public holidays. It’s recommended that you visit on a clear day to see the furthest. Sunset rides are particularly stunning and offer some of the best views and opportunities for photos. Ride at night to see the city illuminated. Check the official website for operating hours.
Located at the oldest working harbor in the Southern Hemisphere, the V&A Waterfront is one of Cape Town’s most popular attractions, with over a dozen hotels, seven museums, an aquarium, urban park, 500 retail and shopping options, and more than 80 restaurants. It is also a popular departure point for sightseeing cruises, helicopter tours, and other tourist activities.
