Cameron Park Zoo
1701 N 4th St, Waco, TX
Cameron Park Zoo is a 52-acre (21-hectare) site along the Brazos River that features more than 1,700 animals representing 300 species. The layout is divided into four sections: the African Savanna, Asian Forest, The Meadows, and Brazos River Country, each with different animals, attractions, and amenities. Animal presentations, themed events, and special programs fill the zoo’s year-long calendar.
You could make a quick trip to the Cameron Park Zoo, though activities such as animal presentations, held September through May, can easily increase your visit beyond 2 hours. You may also want to have a lunch break while you’re there, and there are cafés at the entrance and in the African Savanna section. Parents, take note that The Meadows has a playspace, pavilion, and nature trail perfect for little ones (and when you need a rest).
Weather may cause certain animals to remain off-exhibit at any time.
Only reusable water bottles can be brought into the zoo, no other food or drink.
Water divides The Meadows, preventing you from cutting through the center of the grounds.
Restrooms are available in each section of the zoo.
Cameron Park Zoo is located at 1701 North 4th Street in North Waco, just off of Herring Avenue. There is a dedicated free parking lot and a stop for bus route 1 across the street. The Waco Riverwalk trail also provides access to the zoo’s entrance. Since Waco’s attractions are concentrated around the downtown core, a rideshare or taxi from any hotel or museum is also a fast, easy way to go.
April and May see the highest volume of school field trips, while weekends throughout the year bring in the most general visitors. Keep in mind that since Waco’s climate is humid subtropical, many animals may be more active in the early morning and docile in the later hours. It’s best to arrive just after the zoo opens, when the animals are active and anticipating their morning feed.
Cameron Park Zoo is part of the riverfront greenspace that includes Cameron Park, the Waco Riverwalk, Indian Spring Park, Lake Brazos Park, and the Baylor University campus. Hike along the trails, spend time in the park, or cast a line in the river and you’ll spot wildlife such as Georgetown salamanders, Brazos River snakes, prairie dogs, Houston toads, golden-cheeked warblers, and perhaps even alligators.
