POINT OF INTEREST

CAC Málaga (Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga)

Calle Alemania, Malaga, ESP

Málaga’s Contemporary Art Museum—or CAC Málaga (Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga)—is housed in a 65,000-square-foot (6,000-square-meter) multi-use space, with about a third of its size dedicated to art exhibits and the remaining two-thirds to conferences and cultural events. The museum has a permanent collection of about 400 works, many of which are on loan to the museum from private collectors.

Located in the former Málaga Wholesale Market, the two-story building features a unique triangular floor plan defined by cubic spaces and straight lines. It’s modeled after the German concept, “Kunsthalle,” mounting temporary art exhibitions similar to an art gallery. Though the collection constantly evolves, CAC Málaga is particularly notable for showcasing mid-20th-century works by modern artists. The museum also hosts a regular program of temporary exhibitions dedicated to up-and-coming Spanish artists and guest lectures, courses, and workshops for all ages.

  • There is a cafe with an outdoor patio on the museum's ground floor.

  • The museum is wheelchair- and stroller-accessible, and guide dogs are allowed. Museum information is also available in large print and braille.

  • Entry to the museum is free and can be reached via hop-on, hop-off bus tours of Málaga.

CAC Málaga is located in the Soho de Málaga neighborhood of the city on the banks of the Guadalmedina River. The museum is a 5-minute walk from several bus stops and is close to the Málaga-Centro-Alameda train station, which connects Malaga with cities along the west coast, including Torremolinos and Benalmádena.

During the winter, CAC Málaga is open Tuesday through Sunday, 9am to 9:30pm, and in the summer (from July 1 to Aug. 31), 9am to 2pm and 5pm to 9:30pm. It is closed on Mondays, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day and open on select Mondays throughout the year.

In addition to CAC Málaga, other cultural spaces in Málaga worth visiting include the Carmen Thyssen Museum, which focuses on 19th-century Spanish paintings from the collection of Carmen Cervera, the fifth wife of Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemiszathe, and the Picasso Museum (not to be confused with the one in Barcelona). Located in the artist’s birth city, the museum houses works donated by members of Picasso's family.
