POINT OF INTEREST

Budva Old Town

Budva, Montenegro

A small pocket of stone houses with orange roofs squeezed between beaches, Budva Old Town is the historical part of Budva and the city’s most popular attraction. Behind its walls lies a dense network of houses and pathways, as well as some landmarks such as the Budva Citadel and multiple churches. It’s a must-see for anyone interested in the city’s history and scenery.

Budva Old Town is where many tourists begin their sightseeing in Budva, both because of its old-fashioned atmosphere and the various attractions found within its walls. From visiting viewpoints along its fortifications to the Museum of the City of Budva and more, you can find enough to do there to fill a few hours or half a day. There are a number of guided options for exploring the Old Town and learning about its past, from walking tours to shore excursions to day trips.

  • While entry to the Old Town is free of charge, attractions often have their own entrance fees.

  • Many of the buildings there now serve as restaurants and accommodations.

  • Much of Budva Old Town is not accessible for people with wheelchairs, with steps often leading into buildings and to tourist areas such as viewpoints inside the citadel.

  • This area is one of the best places in Budva for shopping, with all sorts of clothing boutiques and jewelry stores lining the streets.

Budva Old Town is at the southern end of the city’s main beachfront, just down from the marina. Walking is the easiest way to get there, though it can take 20 minutes or so when coming from the modern city center. Since public transportation doesn’t connect with the Old Town, your main alternative to walking is taking a taxi.

Summer may be the best time to visit Budva’s beaches, but you don’t need to visit between June and August to enjoy the Old Town. This is when the area is at its busiest, so instead try visiting in the months of April, May, or September, when there are fewer tourists around. If you do go in the summer, an early start is wise.

While the bell towers of Budva’s many churches define the Old Town’s skyline, the Budva Citadel is the district’s main attraction. The walls of the citadel offer some of the best views of the region’s coastline, including of St. Nikola Island. Inside the citadel itself, the highlights are the fortress library and model ships room.
