POINT OF INTEREST

Bucks County Playhouse

70 S Main St, New Hope, Pennsylvania

The site of a former gristmill, the Bucks County Playhouse in New Hope, Pennsylvania, is known for having hosted theatrical luminaries including Helen Hayes, Angela Lansbury, Bob Fosse, Bernadette Peters, and Liza Minnelli. Today, the venue continues to present theater productions, concerts, and even circus shows. The Playhouse also offers a range of classes, workshops, and educational programs for all ages.

A performance at the Bucks County Playhouse is a must-see for visitors to New Hope. Tickets can be purchased online or at the box office. Before or after a show, you can dine at the Playhouse Deck, attached to the venue, which offers views of the Delaware River. Since the theater’s close to other major attractions and just across the river from Lambertville, New Jersey, a visit to the Playhouse can easily fit into a weekend of sightseeing.

  • Several wheelchair and companion seats are available, as well as assistive listening devices for audience members who are hard of hearing.

  • It’s prohibited to take photos, videos or audio recordings in the theater.

  • The mainstage season generally begins in May and runs through the end of year.

The Bucks County Playhouse is set right along the Delaware River, just north of Delaware Canal State Park, in New Hope. The town is about a 90-minute drive from New York City and about a 45-minute drive from Philadelphia. A commuter rail line travels from Philadelphia to nearby Doylestown, which is about 20 minutes away by car.

The box office opens 2 hours before scheduled performances. Also keep in mind that the Bucks County Playhouse uses dynamic pricing, which means ticket prices increase based on demand. To ensure the best price, purchase tickets in advance. On performance days, there’s a valet-only parking lot; arrive at least 1 hour in advance as all parking is first come, first serve.

Not far from the Bucks County Playhouse you’ll find the New Hope Arts Center. Here, view the work of local artists—representing contemporary visual, performing, and literary arts—through rotating exhibits. The center presents six to eight major exhibitions annually, and is usually only open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Check the website for a list of upcoming gallery shows.
