POINT OF INTEREST

Boschendal Wine Estate

Pniel Road, Groot, Franschhoek, Western Cape, 7690

The Cape Dutch-style buildings at the Boschendal Wine Estate are painted a brilliant white, contrasting against the greenery of the Franschhoek valley. In the background, the rugged mountains elevate the scene from the basically bucolic. One of South Africa’s oldest wineries, this historic farm is the perfect place to bask in the peace of the Cape winelands.

The basics

Known for their Shiraz and Chardonnay varieties, Boschendal is a must-see on any tour of Franschhoek’s vineyards. Founded in 1685, a visit provides insight into South Africa’s long history of winemaking.

Tours of the region often stop for an afternoon tasting, but the estate is also home to historical cottages beautifully renovated for guests. With several on-site restaurants focusing on local produce and offering seasonal menus, the estate is a popular destination for those looking for a weekend retreat.

Things to know before you go

  • Plenty of supervised activities for children make the farm a family-friendly destination. Just make sure to book ahead for children’s activities.

  • Plan to spend the day there, as there’s plenty to see and do.

  • Reservations are recommended for their restaurants and wine tastings.

How to get there

The estate is an hour from Cape Town by car, making it an excellent day trip option. Head east via the N1, and take exit 47 onto the R44. Turn left onto Klapmuts - Simondium Road, right onto Franschhoek Road, and right onto Helshoogte Road, which leads to the estate. If you don’t have your own car, it’s a popular stop for many of the wine-tasting tours of the region, which typically depart from Cape Town.

When to get there

May to September is the off-season in Franschhoek, but this means lower prices and a less crowded atmosphere. You’ll have mild temperatures, but the rainy months of July and August fall in this window. Visit the estate on a weekday, and plan to arrive for an early afternoon tasting, which gives you plenty of time to explore the grounds. Friday is also a great time to visit, as they host weekly night markets in the evening.

Horses and wine, the perfect pairing?

Explore the estate on horseback during one of the several tours offered throughout the day (ideally, choose one that leaves before your wine tasting.) You’ll trot through the fruit orchards and learn about their regenerative farm, surrounded by the lush beauty of the Franschhoek valley. Pony rides are also available for kids, so the whole family can enjoy the fun.
