POINT OF INTEREST

Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary

593 Briggs Road, Brighton, Hobart, Tasmania

Some of Australia’s most beloved animals—including kangaroos, koalas, and Tasmanian devils—call the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary home. As one of Tasmania’s most important sanctuaries, Bonorong’s aim is to rescue, rehabilitate, and preserve some of the island’s rarest and most endangered creatures.

Head to Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary to see animals like wombats, koalas, and echidnas; interact with and feed the sanctuary’s free-roaming kangaroos (under supervision); and take a peek inside the animal hospital to learn about rescue efforts. To gain greater insight into the sanctuary’s work, you can also join a feeding tour and help feed the animals or a night tour, where you’ll learn about nocturnal creatures like eastern quolls, tawny frogmouths, and sugar gliders.

  • Admission tickets include an optional guided tour; tours run three times a day and take around 45 minutes.

  • The wildlife sanctuary is mostly outdoors, so wear weather-appropriate clothing.

  • The sanctuary has a vegetarian restaurant (open for lunch only), a snack shop, and a gift shop, as well as barbecue and picnic areas.

  • Most of the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary’s attractions are accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.

Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary is located about 17 miles (27 kilometers) north of Hobart, along the A1 road, and the park offers plenty of free parking. There is no public transportation to the sanctuary, but you can take a taxi or ride-sharing service from Hobart; the drive takes about 30 minutes.

The Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary is open daily all year round, from mid-morning until early evening.Try to plan your visit to coincide with the daily tours which run in the late morning, and early and mid-afternoon; check the schedule for exact times. The busiest times of year to visit are during peak summer season (December and January) and school holidays. If you want to avoid the crowds, opt for a mid-week visit outside of these times.

You can easily pair a trip to Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary with stops at other nearby sights. After visiting with the animals, head to Mt. Wellington to enjoy views of Hobart and the south coast. Alternatively, you can visit the Museum of Old and New Art (Mona), enjoy a stroll around the historic village of Richmond, or get active with a hike in Mt. Field National Park.
