Bode Museum

Am Kupfergraben, Berlin, DEU

The Bode is one of the five museums on Berlin’s UNESCO World Heritage–listed Museum Island. It is now home to the Sculpture Collection, with works from the early Middle Ages to the 18th century; the Museum of Byzantine Art, with pieces from the 3rd to the 15th century, and the Numismatic Collection, one of the world’s largest coin cabinets.

Originally named the Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum after Emperor Frederick III, it was renamed in 1956 after its first curator, Wilhelm von Bode, and fully renovated in 2006. Today, the Bode Museum and its dome act as an unofficial entrance to the buildings of Museum Island and stuns visitors with its grand neobaroque architectural style.

Individual and group guided tours are available to book online, and audio guides are available in German and English. You can purchase the Berlin Pass or Berlin WelcomeCard for free entry to the Bode Museum and 50 other attractions in the city.

  • The Bode Museum is a must-visit for art and architecture lovers.

  • Most visitors spend about two hours perusing the contents of the museum.

  • There are a museum shop and café on the first floor.

  • The museum is accessible to wheelchair users.

The Bode Museum is located on Museum Island in Berlin’s Mitte district. Take the U6 underground line or the S1, S2, or S25 overground line to the Friedrichstrasse station. Alternatively, take tram line M1 or 12 to the Am Kupfergraben stop, or the M4, M5, or M6 to the Hackescher Markt stop.

The Bode Museum is open from 10am to 6pm Tuesday through Sunday with extended hours to 8pm on Thursday. The Gobelins tapestry room is open only on weekends and public holidays. The entire Museum Island complex is quite popular during Berlin’s peak seasons, generally the summer months and Christmas season, and is best explored in the shoulder seasons. Year-round, the most contemplative time to explore is early morning.

Following the principles set by Wilhelm von Bode, who was fond of mixing art collections, the Bode Museum features an eclectic array of pieces. You’ll see an antique Roman sarcophagi along with 150 paintings from Berlin’s Picture Gallery as well as half a million coins and medals in the Coin Cabinet.
