Bibi-Heybat Mosque (Bibiheybet Mescidi)

Bibiheybət məscidi, Baku, AZE

The relatively recently built Bibi-Heybat Mosque in Baku is an excellent recreation of the 13th-century Shirvansha Farrukhzad II lbh Ahsitan II, also called “the mosque of Fatima.” After it was destroyed by the Bolsheviks in 1936, the site remained in ruins until it was rebuilt in 1994. It’s the Muslim spiritual center in Azerbaijan and a popular tourist attraction, with its three domes, two minarets, and colorful tiles.

Join a full-day tour of Baku for a guided tour of Bibi-Heybat Mosque, or feel free to explore it on your own. However, private or group tours are available, which may make navigating the logistics much more manageable. Plus, there are layers of history to uncover here, which might be better understood from a local guide, where you can ask questions. Guides will also help arrange the rest of your time in Baku and Azerbaijan if you need some recommendations or assistance.

  • Make sure to dress with respect. You’ll see shorts and T-shirts in Baku, so that’s fine for the city. But if you enter religious establishments inside or outside the city, dress more modestly.

  • Consider booking a tour to Gobustan and Absheron to make the most of your guided excursion to Bibi-Heybat Mosque.

  • Check out the tomb of Ukeyma Khanum, a descendant of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad, while you visit the mosque.

Buses and taxis can easily get you to Bibi-Heybat Mosque, so there is no need to stress. It’s a popular Baku destination, so your taxi driver will undoubtedly know the best way to get there. Or, if you don’t want to hassle arranging your transport, book a private or group tour that includes transfers from your hotel.

Plan to visit Baku and the Bibi-Heybat Mosque between April and October. These months have the best kind of weather for walking between the sites comfortably. However, the mosque is open all year, so feel free to visit whenever suits you and your group the best.

After a Baku tour, including Bibi-Heybat Mosque and other cultural and historical landmarks, have a wind-down at the Nar & Sharab Beach Club. Hang out by the pool, order some drinks, and relax. Burgers, fries, salads, and more are on the menu, so treat yourself to a lazy lunch, reflecting on all the culture you’ve learned about.
