Bhaja Caves

SItuated in the Western Ghats, and within day-tripping distance of Mumbai, the Bhaja Caves is a series of 22 rock-hewn cave structures dating back to the 2nd century BC. They're worth visiting for their beautifully carved prayer halls, stupas, and relics, along with their depictions of scenes from Indian mythology.
Although often overshadowed by the nearby Karla Caves, the Bhaja caves are equally worth a visit; in fact, most people end up going to both, often as part of an organized tour from Mumbai or Pune. The caves feature all sorts of stupas and intricately carved depictions of deities, as well as carvings of people playing the Indian tabla drums (an indication of just how old that instrument is).
Bhaja Caves are a must-visit for anyone interested in history and architecture.

Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for a lot of walking
Bhaja Caves, located about a two-hour drive from Mumbai, are frequently visited in conjunction with the Karla Caves (about a 20-minute drive north). There are plenty of tours from Mumbai that stop at both, though independent travelers can also reach both sites by bus via the nearby town of Lonavala.
The caves are open daily from 8am to 6pm. The best time to visit is first thing in the morning, when there aren't as many people around and when temperatures are cooler. Many people visit the Karla Caves first; beat crowds by switching it up and doing the reverse. The best time of year to visit is from October through March; April and May can be hot and June through September can be rainy.
Most of India’s ancient attractions, including these caves, are managed by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), a government organization charged with preserving and maintaining ancient sites.
