POINT OF INTEREST

Basilica of the National Vow (La Basílica del Voto Nacional)

Quito, ECU

One of the largest neo-Gothic churches in the Americas, La Basílica del Voto Nacional is an unmistakable feature of the skyline. Perched on a hill, the 19th-century beauty has three towers, which may be climbed to enjoy a fantastic city panorama. Technically unfinished, local legend opines that when the completion of the basilica arrives, so will the end of the world.

On the exterior, which has been inspired by Notre-Dame in Paris, look for the gargoyles of animals native to Ecuador such as iguanas, pumas, iguanas, and condors, created by the indigenous artisans. Climb steps, ladders and cross wooden bridges to get to the towers for a perfect view of the Virgen de Quito statue atop the Panecillo.xa0

Most half-day and full-day walking and bus sightseeing tours stop at the basilica, including thematic tours focusing on chocolate-making, urban legends or street food and art. For more mobility, take a scooter around the city and up to Mitad del Mundo; ride the cable car above the city for panoramic views; or ride horseback up the Pichincha volcano.

  • La Basilica del Voto Nacional is an ideal spot for history, art, and architecture lovers.
  • A small fee is required to visit the top of the towers.
  • Elevators go to the top, but they don't always work.
  • Photography inside the church is allowed.
  • Stop at the café on the third floor.
  • Only the bottom floor is wheelchair-friendly.

Basilica del Voto Nacional is located on the northern edge of the historic center of Quito, about seven blocks north of Independence Square. Walk about 12 minutes or take bus #12 for about 25 minutes. If coming from the north, take a bus to Terminal Carcelén, then a second bus to El Ejido. From here, walk southwest for a few minutes.

Basilica del Voto Nacional is open to tourists every day from morning until the afternoon. The church is far less crowded on weekdays, and is particularly striking after dark when it is illuminated in a golden glow. Come in November and December for the colorful Fiestas de Quito when food markets spring up, along with parades, and flamenco shows.

While hard to compete with the gargoyles and the view from the towers, the church features an exquisite side chapel dedicated to the holy sacrament. The Chapel of the Sacrament features exquisitely painted walls, mosaic-tiled floors, and an altar dedicated to the Blessed Virgin.
