POINT OF INTEREST

Baphuon

Angkor Archaeological Park, Angkor, Siem Reap

With shaded pavilions and elaborately carved stone pieces, Baphuon is one of the most magical temples in Angkor Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Set within the grounds of Angkor Thom, a huge 12th-century site that dwarfs even Angkor Wat in size, Baphuon attracts visitors with its reclining Buddha and dilapidated charm.

The majority of Angkor tours—which typically depart from Siem Reap and include round-trip hotel transfers—pay a visit to Angkor Thom, the complex that houses the temple of Baphuon as well as the beautiful Bayon, famous for its intricately carved faces. Depending on your preference, you can opt to travel between temples by tuk-tuk, air-conditioned vehicle, or army jeep, and add on a sunrise visit to Angkor Wat. If you’re looking for an extra special experience, a helicopter flight provides bird’s-eye views of Baphuon and the entire UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  • As the subject of major ongoing archaeological work, much of the Baphuon site is inaccessible.

  • Take plenty of water and wear comfortable shoes to explore the expansive site.

  • Mosquitos are rife so cover yourself in bug spray.

  • Save time by booking your Angkor Archaeological Park admission ticket in advance.

The southern gate to Angkor Thom lies 4.5 miles (7 kilometers) north of Siem Reap, past Angkor Wat. You can reach Angkor Thom by taxi or tuk-tuk, but if you’re planning to visit multiple temples, booking a guided tour is recommended as distances between the temples are great.

Angkor Archaeological Park is open between sunrise and sunset. If you want to feel like you have the site all to yourself, visit Baphuon at sunrise when the majority of travelers are at Angkor Wat. In order to escape the midday heat, aim to get to the site either early in the morning or before sunset.

Angkor Thom, home to some of the most iconic temples in Siem Reap, offers a wealth of photo opportunities. The much-photographed Ta Prohm, made famous by the Hollywood blockbusterTomb Raider, lies to the east and is a joy to photograph; the gnarled roots of trees burst through stone ruins. Additionally, the faces of Bayon temple are made for social media—for a small fee, locals direct you to the best spots.
