Baku Old City (Icherisheher)

Walled City Baku (Icherisheher), Baku, AZE

Narrow streets inside high city walls weave together historical landmarks in Icherisheher, the neighborhood that makes up the Baku Old City. Around every corner, visitors will find mosques, caravanserai, and the enormous Palace of the Shirvanshahs complex. Carpet shops and food stalls make the area a hit with window shoppers and snackers.

With many popular tourist attractions in Baku Old City, the area is a focus for many city tours and walking tours in Baku. Allow at least a few hours to explore Baku Old City, whether you’re on a tour or sightseeing independently, and don’t be surprised if you spend most of the day here. Many tours don’t include admission to Old City attractions, so you’ll likely need to return to venture inside the palace and Maiden Tower.

Follow up your Old City sightseeing with the nearby Mini-Venice Park or the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum, depending on your interests.

  • Avoid driving in Baku Old City because of the many narrow one-way streets.

  • Stairways, obstructed and high sidewalks, and narrow streets make this part of Baku inaccessible for visitors with wheelchairs.

  • Restaurants serving Azeri cuisine line outside the Baku Old City and are typically open from morning until late in the evening.

The Baku Old City is between the city center, the Baku Boulevard, and the Flame Towers. If you’re coming from the city center, you can simply walk there or take the metro’s Red Line to Icherisheher station. You can also take various city buses to reach the walls around the Old City, including the #18, #53, #5, and #88 buses.

Even though Baku Old City is one of the main attractions in Baku, it doesn’t tend to get too busy even during the middle of the day in peak season. Visit in shoulder months such as April, May, September, and October to enjoy balanced weather suitable for spending a lot of time outdoors.

While there are many things to see inside the Baku Old City, the sandstone city walls surrounding the area are also extremely interesting. The most impressive section of the walls is at the Gosha Gala Gapysy, also known as the Paired Fortress Gates, which were once the entrance to the Old City.
