Established in 1992 as Vietnam’s eighth national park, Ba Be National Park protects nearly 39 square miles (100 square kilometers of rainforest, lakes, limestone peaks, caves, waterfalls, and ethnic minority villages. The park also boasts diverse natural biodiversity—it's home to 550 plant species and 65 different types of mammals.
The basics
For Hanoi residents and visitors in Hanoi, Ba Be National Park is a convenient escape from the bustle of Vietnam’s capital city. That said, there are a plethora of day trips and tours that cover the national park and save you the hassle of car hire. Excursions—which explore the park either on foot, by boat, or by bicycle—typically cover highlights such as Ba Be Lake, Hua Ma Cave, and Dau Dang Waterfalls.
Things to know before you go
- Nearly all Ba Be tours involve at least some walking, so ensure that you’re wearing sturdy hiking shoes and have a waterproof jacket in case of a downpour.
- There are plenty of accommodation options in Ba Be National Park—some of which are perched right on the banks of the lake; be sure to book in advance during peak season.
- There are no ATMs inside the park so ensure you take cash; snacks, food, and drinks are available from kiosks and restaurants scattered throughout the park.
How to get there
Ba Be National Park is located 150 miles (240 kilometers) from Hanoi. Depending on traffic, it takes around 3 hours to reach the park via the QL3 highway. Private operator buses depart daily from Hanoi to the park in the peak season.
When to get there
To escape the humidity and downpours typical of north Vietnam, visit the park between March and May, or September and November. At the start of the first lunar month of the year, the Long Tong Festival occurs; the festivities see residents of all the park’s ethnic minority villages come together to make ceremonial offerings and celebrate the new year.
Sailing on Ba Be Lake
Ba Be Lake is the focal point of Ba Be National Park, and for good reason—the lake is the largest freshwater lake in Vietnam. Boat rides are the best way to admire its highlights, which include the legend-shrouded Widow’s Island and Fairy Pond; and the Buddhist An Ma Temple, which sits on the shores of the lake.
