Atlas Coal Mine National Historic Site

The historic Atlas Coal Mine, located in the Alberta Badlands offers visitors a glimpse into the region's coal mining history. The old wooden structures stand out starkly against the wide blue sky and the red soil of the region, while Atlas Coal Mine are a testament to the industry that once thrived in this area.
You can visit the coal mine independently, including taking a walk on the Rail Berm trail, or see more on one of Atlas Coal Mine's tour options, including the Processing Plant Tour and the Mine Portal Hike, which takes you into some of the underground sections of the mine. Don't miss getting tickets to ride Linda, the 90-year old electric locomotive that runs around the mine.

From the city of Calgary, the mine is 90 miles (145 kilometers) away, accessible via the Trans-Canada Highway. It takes roughly 1.5 hours to reach it. If you don’t have your own vehicle, there are plenty of car rental companies in Calgary, or book a customized tour of the region that includes this attraction.
The mine is open seven days a week, but closes for the season in early October and reopens in mid-May. Alberta heats up in summer, so visit in the early fall or spring for more temperate conditions and to avoid the busyness of summer break.
