Army Museum North Queensland

Mitchell Street, Townsville, Queensland

The Army Museum North Queensland—also known as the Jezzine Barracks Military Museum—presents the history of the Australian military in the region through exhibits, artifacts, and interactive displays. This Townsville museum includes information from the establishment of the Australian Army in North Queensland in the late 19th century through more recent conflicts.

Located in the former military barracks at Kissing Point in Townsville, the Army Museum North Queensland showcases Queensland’s military history through three galleries. Gallery One focuses on the late 1800s to the end of the Boer War (1902); Gallery Two focuses on World War I and II; and Gallery Three focuses on later-20th century and more recent conflicts, from Korea and Vietnam to those in the Middle East. Most travelers visit the museum independently while checking out Townsville.

  • Entrance to the museum is free, but donations are appreciated.

  • The museum is wheelchair accessible.

  • Gallery Three contains a play area for kids that is set up as an imitation military command center.

The museum is located on the edge of central Townsville, at Kissing Point. If you are exploring downtown and waterfront Townsville on foot, you can reach the museum by walking to the northern end of The Strand and past the Strand Rockpool public outdoor pools. Car parking also is available within the Jezzine Barracks Precinct.

The museum is open on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, from morning until early afternoon. It also opens on April 25th—Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) Day—from late morning until early afternoon. It’s closed on Christmas Day and Good Friday. Groups can book a visit outside of these regular opening hours.

Just east of the Jezzine Barracks is Fort Kissing Point, which housed the Army Museum North Queensland until 2008. Parts of the 1891 fort have been restored, and the area around the fort includes walking trails, interpretive signage, and 32 public artworks. From here you also can take in the views to picturesque Magnetic Island.
