Armenian Church

4 Armenian St., Armanitola, Dhaka, Dhaka Division

The Bangladeshi capital’s Armenian Church has stood since 1781, and it's one of Dhaka’s most historically significant religious landmarks. Reflective of the once-thriving Armenian community that relocated to the city in the 17th and 18th centuries, it offers a window into the city’s past, as well as a tranquil place to unwind.

In the heart of Dhaka’s Armanitola neighborhood—named for the thriving community of Armenian traders and immigrants who once lived here—stands the white-and-gold Armenian Church. Long left in disrepair, the small church has been renovated and reborn as an unexpected landmark in the Muslim-majority city. Today, it's a worthy sightseeing destination for its grounds with scenic gardens and a centuries-old Armenian cemetery. Some Dhaka sightseeing tours stop here, including walking tours, private excursions, and history tours.

  • The Armenian Church is free to enter, though prepare to tip the caretaker, who may need to open the gates for you.

  • Services are not regularly held, but there are occasional events for holidays like Christmas and Easter.

  • Dress conservatively and show respect to visiting worshippers, as you would when visiting any religious landmark.

The Armenian Church is located at 4 Armenian Street in the Armanitola neighborhood of Dhaka, near the Buriganga River. Local ferries and bus lines serve the area, while taxi and rideshare services make getting there even easier.

The Armenian Church is open daily, from morning until early evening. When you arrive, the gates may be closed. Visitors should knock and wait to be admitted. It’s best to visit on a good-weather day to take advantage of the church’s gardens and stroll through its cemetery.

Armanitola is part of the greater area of Old Dhaka—a vibrant and historic part of the city whose origins date back centuries. Old Dhaka is also home to several landmarks, including the Ahsan Manzil Museum, a palace once home to the Nawab of Dhaka that is now a museum, and the Lalbagh Fort, a Mughal–era landmark that dates to the 17th century.
