POINT OF INTEREST

André Malraux Museum of Modern Art (MuMa)

2 Blvd. Clemenceau, Le Havre, Normandy

Housed in a modernist, glass-fronted building overlooking the water in Le Havre, the André Malraux Museum of Modern Art (MuMa) is a major architectural landmark in its own right. But don’t miss the chance to venture inside, where you’ll find one of the country’s top Impressionist art collections and a rotating cast of temporary exhibitions.

A cultural icon in the UNESCO-listed city of Le Havre for decades, the André Malraux Museum of Modern Art is the first thing you see when approaching the port by boat. Arriving by foot is no less impressive, and it’s easy to spend many hours soaking up the MuMa’s Impressionist art collection (second only in scope and quality to Paris’ Musée d’Orsay), plus works by local artists like Raoul Dufy, Georges Braque, and Jean Dubuffet.

Given its proximity to the highlights of downtown Le Havre, the MuMa is easy to explore independently; it’s also on the city’s Impressionist Trail. You can also explore the museum on an Impressionism-themed tour, which will provide an in-depth introduction to its artworks.

  • If you’re looking to pick up souvenirs, the museum’s on-site boutique, La Galerne, sells books, prints, games, crafts, and more.

  • You can only buy tickets at the museum, while families and disabled visitors receive discounted admission.

  • The museum is free to visit on the first Saturday of the month.

  • MuMa is fully accessible to all disabled visitors, and wheelchairs are available to rent for free from the front desk.

  • If you’re feeling hungry while at the museum, head to Les Fauves Café-Restaurant for seasonal bistro cuisine.

The André Malraux Museum of Modern Art is at 2 Boulevard Clemenceau, right in Le Havre’s Downtown. It is a 30-minute walk or 10-minute taxi ride from the Gare du Havre, the city’s main train station, which links it to Paris and other major hubs. The area is also served by several local bus and tram lines.

The André Malraux Museum of Modern Art is open every day except Mondays, from late morning until evening, with slightly later hours on weekends. It has variable opening hours on French public holidays, so it’s good to check its schedule if visiting then. Note that the last admission to the museum is 15 minutes before closing, and everyone can visit for free on July 14 each year.

If the André Malraux Museum of Modern Art is one of Le Havre’s most notable cultural highlights, then another unmissable stop is Le Volcan (The Volcano). Designed by Brazilian starchitect Oscar Niemeyer, the cultural center hosts opera and theatrical performances, concerts, workshops, dance events, and a wide range of other cultural happenings.
