Amman Citadel (Jabal al-Qalaa)

Jabal al-Qalaa is the highest of Amman’s seven hills, lending natural drama to this fascinating place. It’s easy to spend a few hours discovering the maze of ruins in the Umayyad Palace, and the on-site museum displays everything from Dead Sea Scrolls to prehistoric objects. One of Amman’s most historic attractions, the Citadel is a stop on many city tours.

• The archeological site offers little shade, so take plenty of sun protection.

• Sturdy shoes are a must, as the ground is rocky and uneven.

• Tickets to the Citadel are included in the Jordan Pass.

• Due to rough terrain, the Citadel isn’t accessible to wheelchairs or strollers.

While the Amman Citadel is close to other downtown sites, a steep hill to the entrance means that most visitors arrive in a taxi or as part of a guided tour. When you’re leaving, it’s possible to continue to the Roman Theater on foot, descending a short path from the eastern edge of the Citadel.

Morning and evening are the best times to photograph the Amman Citadel, when soft light illuminates the city’s otherwise monochromatic skyline. Time your visit to coincide with one of the five daily calls to prayer—you’ll hear the sound echoing from minarets across the city in a dramatic stereo effect.

Some of Amman’s top attractions are packed into the area surrounding the Citadel. Check out the Roman Theater and Nymphaeum, as well as the Grand Husseini Mosque. From there, it’s a short walk or taxi ride to the Jordan Museum to see some of the country’s most impressive archeological artifacts.
