Allianz Arena

Werner-Heisenberg-Allee 25, Munich, DEU

Home turf of Munich’s FC Bayern and TSV 1860 football (American soccer) teams, Allianz Arena is one of Germany’s largest sports stadiums. Built in 2005, it’s renowned both for its award-winning architecture—by Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron—and sports legacy as host to major events, such as a World Cup and UEFA Champions League Final.

There’s more to do at Allianz Arena than just attending a match. Admire the arena’s futuristic facade, made from thousands of diamond-shaped panels, then head inside for a behind-the-scenes tour. Peek into the dressing rooms, walk through the Players’ tunnel, and step out into the 75,000-seat arena. Afterward, continue to the FC Bayern Erlebniswelt Museum to learn more about Germany’s top team, visit the Hall of Fame, and pick up some official merchandise at the shops.

To avoid waiting in line at the entrance, prebook required admission tickets for the museum and guided tours. Combination tickets are also available, and children under 5 are free.

  • Wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking and climbing the stadium steps.

  • A stadium restaurant and bistro are open daily; food kiosks are open on match days only.

  • The museum is accessible for strollers and wheelchairs, and disabled access tours are available by prior reservation. Strollers are not allowed on the stadium tours, but can be left in the luggage storage.

The Allianz Arena is located in the Schwabing-Freimann neighborhood, 7.5 miles (12 kilometers) north of downtown Munich. The closest S-Bahn station is Fröttmaning (Line U6), about a 15-minute walk to the stadium. Paid parking is available on-site.

Tours take place daily between 9am–4:30pm, although there is often only one English language tour each day, so book in advance if English is preferred. Avoid visiting on a match day, when the stadium will be crowded and tours are available for ticket holders only. If you can, pass by the stadium at night when the arena’s high-tech facade—crafted from illuminated air cushions—change color and create a striking visual in the night sky.

Along with the historic buildings and gothic churches of Old Town, Munich harbors some impressive modern architecture. After checking out the Allianz Arena, stop by the BMW Welt, where the space-aged silver facade is as impressive as the cars inside. Nearby, the Olympic Tower is the city’s tallest building, while other unique buildings include the multi-colored Museum Brandhorst; the Herz-Jesu-Kirche church, with its unusual blue glass facade; and the imposing glass and stone Main Synagogue.

Yes, tourists can visit Allianz Arena even when there isn’t a match being played there. Tourists can visit the FC Bayern Museum to learn all about the history of the local football club FC Bayern Munich or combine it with one of several guided tours of the arena that let visitors see more of the stadium.

Each of the Allianz Stadium tours has different lengths, ranging from 30 to 45 minutes on the Arena View tour to 1.5 hours on the VIP Tour. These tours also include entry to the FC Bayern Museum afterward and it is generally recommended to allow yourself at least an extra hour to comfortably visit the museum.

On the Allianz Arena Tour, visitors will see many parts of the stadium, such as the middle and lower tiers of the stadium’s stands. Highlights of the Allianz Arena tour include seeing the players’ tunnel, walking along the perimeter of the pitch to the coaches’ bench, and visiting the players’ changing rooms.

Allianz Arena is special for several reasons, one being that it is the home ground for FC Bayern Munich, the most successful club in the history of the Bundesliga. But the stadium itself is famous for its ability to completely change color thanks to a shell of special illuminated panels that cover its exterior.

Only VIP tours of Allianz Arena have an age restriction and request visitors be at least 14 years old. The FC Bayern Museum, Arena Tour, and the Arena View experience are open to all ages and offer discounts to children aged 6 to 13, while children 5 years and younger enter for free with an adult.

No tours of Allianz Arena are provided on matchdays. It is possible to visit the FC Bayern Museum on matchdays, but you will need a match ticket for that day and a ticket to the museum. VIP tours normally offered on Saturday are moved to Friday when a match is being held on Saturday.
