Algonquin Lookout Trail

Unorganized South Nipissing District, Canada

Located in Algonquin Provincial Park, the Lookout Trail is a short but steep loop trail that leads through a young Algonquin forest to a high cliff, offering spectacular views of the park and its geological features. Easily accessible, it’s a popular trail for hiking, bird-watching, leaf-peeping, and snowshoeing.

Visitors can independently hike the moderately difficult 1.3-mile (2.1-kilometer) lollipop loop Lookout Trail thanks to its wide, well-maintained trail and trail markers. However, the hike is also included as part of some guide tours of Algonquin Park. The trail climbs steadily uphill through the forest until you reach the top of the cliff, where you'll find several benches and sweeping views of the park, the Lake of Two Rivers, and Little Rock Lake.

  • Access to Algonquin Park and the Lookout Trail requires a park permit, which can be purchased online or over the phone.

  • Wear sturdy shoes to navigate the steep trail and bring bug spray, especially in late spring and summer.

  • There is a cliff at the lookout without barriers. Keep a close eye on children and pets.

  • You may bring leashed dogs.

  • There is limited to no cell phone coverage in the park.

The Lookout Trail is located in the south part of Algonquin Provincial Park, 24.7 miles (39.7 kilometers) from the West Gate and 10.1 miles (16.3 kilometers) from the East Gate, along Highway 60. There is a parking lot at the trailhead. The trail is also included in some guided tours of Algonquin Provincial Park.

You can walk the Lookout Trail year-round, though winter conditions and snow may require snowshoes, microspikes, or other equipment. It’s a popular trail and can get busy in peak times, such as weekends and holidays. It’s especially scenic in the fall (between mid-September and mid-October) when the trees change colors. An hour should be sufficient time to complete the hike.

In addition to the Lookout Trail, hikers can choose from about 20 additional trails in the park, most of which are rated moderate. Other activities include canoeing a vast canoe route network, boating, trout fishing, birding, mountain biking, and camping. In winter, activities include snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, ice skating, fat biking, dog sledding, and winter camping.
