POINT OF INTEREST

Alcudia Old Town

Passeig de la Mare de Déu de la Victòria, Alcudia, Spain

Dating back to around 70 BC, Alcudia Old Town is a historical highlight of north Mallorca. This charming enclave—which feels a world away from the modern holiday resorts of the island’s south—features Roman ruins, ancient city walls that you can walk atop, a bullring, churches, and a smattering of tapas restaurants serving Mallorcan specialties.

Highlights of Alcudia Old Town include Sant Jaume d’Alcudia, a 14th-century church home to a resplendent altar, and the ruins of the Roman city of Pollentia, founded in 123 BC. Admission to the ruins includes entry to the nearby Museu Monogràfic de Pollentia. The best way to explore Alcudia Old Town is on a walking tour or in a broader exploration of north Mallorca, where top attractions include the Blue Flag Formentor Beach and Tramuntana Mountains.

  • The historic streets of Alcudia Old Town are mostly cobbled, which may be challenging for travelers in wheelchairs or strollers.

  • The hotels in Alcudia Old Town tend to be more high-end and boutique, as they’re located in historic buildings.

  • Old Town restaurants serve traditional Mallorcan tapas ranging from elevated to no frills.

  • There’s plenty of free parking on the outskirts of the Old Town.

While the capital and most resorts are concentrated in the island's south, Alcudia Old Town is in the north. From Palma de Mallorca, it’s a 40-minute drive via MA-13 roads or around two hours via public transport—take the 302 bus from the center of Palma to Estacio Intermodal, a 10-minute taxi drive from the Old Town.

Alcudia Old Town’s biggest claim to fame is its biweekly market, which takes place every Tuesday and Sunday from early morning until around lunch. Stalls fill the historic center, and you can buy food, textiles, crafts, and souvenirs. The market reduces dramatically in winter (December through March).

The island of Mallorca is a mecca for foodies. Its cuisine mainly focuses on seafood, but there are some surprising twists. It's famous for its bunyols (fried donuts) and arroz brut, a twist on paella that’s more of a soup. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, sample coca de cuarto, a light sponge cake typically topped with chocolate or orange.
