POINT OF INTEREST

Al Areen Wildlife Park & Reserve

Al Markh, Northern Governorate

This sprawling park is dedicated to conserving and breeding indigenous Arabian wildlife species. Inside, you can see many colorful land- and water-based creatures, including Arabian onyx, emus, ostriches, camels, pygmy goats, flamingos, and llamas.

The park is divided into sections: Water Birds Parks, Wild Birds Park, Wild Animals Complex, and the Desert Flora Garden. Explore the sprawling conserve on foot, or take one of the free bus tours. On board, listen to commentary in both English and Arabic. Tours focusing on Bahrain’s flora and fauna often visit the reserve and the Tree of Life, which has defied science by flourishing in the desert for more than 400 years.

  • The Al Areen Wildlife Park & Reserve is ideal for families, wildlife enthusiasts, and budding naturalists.

  • There’s an admission fee to enter the zoo, but there are discounts for children and seniors.

  • The park is accessible to both wheelchairs and strollers.

From the center of Manama, Bahrain’s capital city, Al Areen Wildlife Park & Reserve is 20 miles (33 kilometers)—it takes around 30 minutes to drive there via the Shaikh Khalifa Bin Salman highway. You can also take the A2 bus and disembark at the Gravity-1 stop, from which the park is a 30-minute walk—skip this option if you visit in the summer heat.

Al Areen Wildlife Park & Reserve is open seven days a week, from morning until late afternoon. It closes at lunchtime on Saturday. The best time to visit Bahrain is between December and March when the desert climate is mildest and best for sightseeing.

Bahrain is rich in culture, so once you’ve explored its flora and fauna, focus on its history and architecture. Top picks include the Bahrain National Museum, home to archaeological artifacts from ancient Dilmun, and the Al Hayat Museum (Beit Al Quran), where you’ll find a 50,000-strong library of Islam-focused books.
