Abbey of Saint-Remi (Abbaye Saint-Rémi)

Rue Saint-Julien, Reims, Grand Est

One of Reims’ four UNESCO World Heritage sites, the Abbey of Saint-Remi (Abbaye Saint-Rémi) is also one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in northern France. The 11th-century abbey church houses Saint Rémi’s tomb, while the adjacent buildings host the Saint-Remi Museum’s exhibition spaces.

The abbey is an architectural standout, with its Romanesque nave (site of Saint-Remi’s tomb) and ornate choir. As a host to the Saint-Remi Museum (Musée Saint-Rémi), the abbey also showcases exhibitions about the history of Reims and its regional archaeology. Artifacts include Roman mosaics and tapestries. The Abbey of Saint-Remi is located in central Reims, making it easy to explore independently as part of a self-led tour of the city’s historic landmarks. It’s also included in various Reims sightseeing tours.

  • As well as its permanent exhibitions, the Saint-Remi Museum also hosts an array of temporary exhibitions, workshops, and other events.

  • Owing to its historic architecture, only parts of the abbey are accessible to wheelchair users.

  • You can buy tickets on-site. Seniors enjoy discounted entry, and admission is free to students, youths under 18, disabled visitors, and students under 25.

  • From January through March, the museum is free for all visitors.

The Abbey of Saint-Remi is located on the Rue Saint-Julien in central Reims. Direct TGV trains link Paris to Reims in under an hour; it is a half-hour walk from the station to the abbey or a short cab ride. The area is also served by numerous bus lines.

The Saint-Remi Museum is open every day except Monday, from morning until early evening. It is also closed annually on January 1, May 1, November 1, and December 25. The church itself can also be visited every day (except Sunday mornings); independent visits are free.

The Abbey of Saint-Remi is one of four UNESCO World Heritage sites in and around Reims, making the small city a heavy-hitter for history lovers. Other highlights to visit include the Reims Cathedral, celebrated for its Gothic architecture; the adjacent Palace of Tau, the former residence of the archbishop; and the Champagne Hillsides, Houses, and Cellars, located just beyond city limits.
