Newfound Gap is 16 mi. n. of Oconaluftee Visitor Center on Newfound Gap Rd. (US 441) or 13 mi. s. of Sugarlands Visitor Center on Newfound Gap Rd. in Tennessee. In 1940, President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated Great Smoky Mountains National Park at this site, which rests at the road's highest point. Visitors encounter spectacular views and can walk onto the Appalachian Trail. A sign indicates where one can stand to straddle the Tennessee-North Carolina border. Note: Newfound Gap Road is subject to closure due to weather conditions. Time: Allow 30 minutes minimum.
