William Paca House and Garden, 186 Prince George St., was the estate of Paca, governor of Maryland and signer of the Declaration of Independence. Built 1763-65, the restored Georgian house, which combines elements of English Georgian style with progressive Maryland additions such as massive end chimneys, contains period furnishings. The restored 2-acre garden area includes a Chinese Chippendale bridge, a summer house, a fish-shaped pond, formal parterres and a wilderness garden. Seasonal events and lectures also are offered. The garden was originally laid out 1765-72 and was paved over in the mid-20th century with asphalt. Research, aerial photography and background details in Charles Wilson Peale's portrait of Paca aided in its reconstruction. Guided 1-hour tours include both floors of the house and a self-guiding garden tour. Thirty-minute guided tours include the house's first floor and a self-guiding garden tour. Guided tours are available.
