The Walters Art Museum

The Walters Art Museum is downtown at jct. Centre and Cathedral sts. at 600 N. Charles St. The museum houses more than 36,000 works of art spanning 55 centuries in three buildings. Highlights include Egyptian mummies, Renaissance suits of armor, Fabergé eggs, Art Nouveau jewelry and old master paintings. Collections include ancient Egyptian, Islamic, Roman, Greek, Ethiopian, medieval and American art; Renaissance and post-Renaissance sculptures and decorative arts; 18th- and 19th-century paintings and sculptures; Asian art; and illuminated manuscripts. Raphael's “Madonna of the Candelabra” was the first of his Madonna paintings to become part of an American collection. Other Renaissance and Baroque artists represented include El Greco, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and Paolo Veronese. An audio tour is available, and guided tours are offered on weekends.
