Top Tourist Spots to Visit in San Francisco

There's something naturally appealing about San Francisco. Its quirky vibe and welcoming atmosphere — combined with iconic attractions, rolling hills and impossibly dense fog — have long made this the kind of city where people simply want to spend time exploring.

San Francisco's popularity is on the rise, as in 2022 travel to the city increased by more than 29 percent. This includes a whopping 211 percent increase among international travelers — with nearly 22 million people coming to town throughout the year. As travel insiders continue to predict an uptick in trips to the city by the bay, it's important for those planning a trip to know the best tourist spots to visit in San Francisco.

Ride Across the Iconic Golden Gate Bridge

Spanning nearly two miles across the Golden Gate Strait, the Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most well-known and recognizable attractions in San Francisco. In many ways, it's considered to be the symbol of the city, highlighting the strength and ingenuity of the people who have long called it home.

Your San Francisco experience doesn't truly begin until you have traversed across this iconic bridge, with a few different ways to go about doing so. Most visitors find that the easiest way to experience one of the top San Francisco tourist spots is to take a San Francisco bus tour. These vehicles have open-top decks that allow you to feel the wind in your air as you trek across the bridge. Other options to consider include walking or biking over the bridge. For Pacific Ocean views, you can cycle on the west side of the bridge. Walkers and bicyclists are able to share the east side of the bridge, which features views of the bay.

Meander Through Golden Gate Park

Featuring more than 1,000 acres, most visitors are surprised to find out that Golden Gate Park is actually larger than the famed Central Park on the other side of the country. It would be easy to spend an entire day exploring the park, which is home to museums, hiking trails, lakes, gardens and a 9-hole golf course.

Hidden gems within Golden Gate Park include:

  • San Francisco Botanical Garden
  • de Young Museum
  • Japanese Tea Garden
  • Shakespeare Garden
  • National AIDS Memorial Grove

Perhaps the biggest surprise within the park, however, is the herd of bison that roam freely. Due to the sheer size of the park, most tourists miss the opportunity to view the bison as they roam the lands, but if you have time, be sure to venture over to the western edge of the park to find these magnificent creatures for yourself.

Experience the Eerie Atmosphere of Alcatraz

Alcatraz is a foreboding island located just off the coast of San Francisco that is home to a former federal prison that held some of the country's most notorious criminals captives. Alcatraz has long been considered one of the most famous tourist spots to see in San Francisco, with thousands of travelers each year embarking on ferry rides to the island in order to enjoy a guided tour of the prison. The only way to experience Alcatraz is to purchase tour tickets and reservations often book up in advance, so you will want to plan ahead.

Indulge in the Beauty of the Palace of Fine Arts

As the only remaining artifact in the city of the World's Fair, the Palace of Fine Arts is one of the most beloved points of interest in the city. There's no cost to visit the palace and it provides you with a peaceful respite from the hustle and bustle of the city. As you stroll around the perimeter of the structure, you will be in the company of ducks and swans that are gliding along the lagoons. Be sure to bring your camera along, as this is one of the most picturesque spots in San Francisco.

Listen to the Sea Lions at Pier 39

Long known as one of the top San Francisco tourist spots, Pier 39 is truly the best place to take in the sights and sounds of the city. This waterfront destination is a family favorite, thanks to the carousel that is in the center of the pier and the shops and restaurants that line the wharf. Of course, the lead entertainers at the pier are the sea lions, who have famously made it their own. On any given day, you may find dozens — or even hundreds — of larger-than-life sea lions basking on the docks and barking endlessly at one another.

Enjoy the Bliss of Sweet Relaxation at Ghirardelli Square

Built around the Ghirardelli Chocolate Factory that was the beating heart of this neighborhood in the late 19th century, Ghirardelli Square is now preferred by tourists who want to enjoy a sweet break from sightseeing. The Original Ghirardelli Ice Cream and Chocolate Shop is located in the center of the square and is a must-do on any San Francisco itinerary. After you have indulged in a scoop or two of ice cream, or your favorite chocolate bar, you can enjoy the upscale boutiques and restaurants that are located in this destination, which is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

Wander the Trails at The Presidio

Founded in 1776, the Presidio is a historic San Francisco destination that is considered to be one of the best places in the city to soak up the natural beauty of the Bay Area. Now operated and maintained as U.S. National Park, the Presidio is home to a variety of attractions, such as the Promenade Trail, the Main Parade Lawn and the Walt Disney Family Museum.

The newest addition to the park grounds, however, is quickly becoming one of the most beloved spots in the Presidio. The Presidio Tunnel Tops were built over the highway and now provide visitors with an opportunity to walk to the shoreline while enjoying some of the best overlooks in the city.

Traverse Lombard Street, Famously Known as the Crookedest Street in the World

Lombard Street stretches for more than 20 blocks across the city, but one block in particular is worth the visit. The block between Hyde and Leavenworth streets winds tightly down a steep hill, showcasing curves that seem nearly impossible to traverse. We don't recommend attempting to drive it yourself if you aren't a local, but if you have the lung capacity, you may want to try walking up or down this block just to experience the aptly named "Crookedest Street in the World."

Immerse Yourself in the Culture and Beauty of Chinatown

Considered to be one of the oldest neighborhoods established by Chinese immigrants in America, San Francisco's Chinatown is one of the best places to experience the authentic culture, tradition and flavor of the Chinese people. In order to gain a full understanding of the community's rich and dynamic heritage, you will want to book a San Francisco Chinatown Walking Tour, which will take you to well-known locales in the neighborhood as well as hidden gems that only those in the know are aware of.

Take Your Photo In Front of the Painted Ladies

Situated directly across from Alamo Square, the Painted Ladies are a series of colorful Victorian homes that you probably recognize from the opening credits of the sitcom Full House. Most tourists feel compelled to run up the hillside and get their own memorable photo with the homes in the background, but just remember, these are occupied private residences. It's important to be respectful and avoid taking photos on the steps or porches of the homes.

Discover Where the Counterculture Movement Began in Haight-Ashbury

By blending the city's vibrant history with its exceptional architecture, Haight-Ashbury is one of the best tourist spots in San Francisco. The neighborhood made a name for itself in the summer of 1967 — otherwise known as the Summer of Love — for being at the center of the country's hippie counterculture movement. Today, it pays homage to its past with eclectic boutiques and perfectly restored homes.

Spend a Day at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

Art enthusiasts have long considered the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, or SFMoMA, to have one of the best collections in the country. However, this elite and iconic museum appeals to more than just passionate artists. With free admission for those under 18 and a variety of interactive, hands-on exhibits, it's a favorite among local families and travelers alike.

Ride on an Iconic Cable Car

Second to the Golden Gate Bridge, the cable car is considered to be one of the most prominent symbols of the city. What was once used as a primary form of public transportation operates today as a historic and immersive experience — it's a must if you are a tourist visiting San Francisco.
