From museums to zoos and even iconic shopping destinations, Dallas offers something for every type of visitor. It offers both thrilling and relaxing experiences, educational landmarks and fine dining. With so much to do and see, it's clear why Dallas manages to attract over 22 million visitors every year.

The only struggle? Narrowing down a long list of possibilities. Our guide highlights the top attractions in Dallas, offering suggestions for how to make the most of every minute in this cosmopolitan wonder.

1.  Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden

  • Location: 8525 Garland Road, Dallas
  • Time Needed: 3-4 hours

Natural beauty abounds in and around Dallas, and while the local parks and nature centers are definitely worth exploring, the local arboretum and botanical garden can bring a more curated version of the natural world to the forefront of your trip. There are many stunning gardens that invite visitors to meander. Each has its own unique aesthetic. The Margaret Elizabeth Jonsson Color Garden, for example, spans over six acres and includes a full rainbow of seasonal plants in every shade imaginable. This garden's lush lawns are always inviting for picnickers, so don't forget to pack a nice lunch.

The Rory Meyers Children’s Adventure Garden strives to develop strong relationships between young visitors and the natural world. Spanning eight acres and overlooking the lovely White Rock Lake, this space has an elevated walkway, a rooftop oasis, a Secret Garden maze and an educational center with an awe-inspiring OmniGlobe.

Keep an eye on the botanical garden calendar, as there is always something exciting happening at the arboretum. In December, holiday charm takes over and guests are encouraged to explore the Christmas Village and view hundreds of nutcrackers amid all the stunning trees. Summer brings a concert series known as Cool Thursdays, when the best acts in town perform before a stunning natural backdrop.

2.  Neiman Marcus

  • Location: 1618 Main Street, Dallas
  • Time Needed: 1 hour

Dallas boasts many excellent shopping destinations, but nothing says iconic quite like the flagship Neiman Marcus store. This is a must-visit for fashionistas and history buffs alike. Set aside plenty of time to explore designer collections that are rarely on display at other locations. Otherwise, simply strolling through the store is a pleasure. The cosmetics department is impressive and the shoe department offers one-of-a-kind footwear.

If you visit around lunchtime, head to level six for a meal at The Zodiac, which echoes the refined atmosphere of the entire department store. The bright decor is a feast for the eyes and the iconic popovers provide another type of feast altogether. During the holidays, the Zodiac boasts one of the best buffets in town. Otherwise, a quick trip to the Neiman Marcus Espresso Bar is a must for keeping your energy up during a busy day.

3.  Galleria Dallas

  • Location: 2201 North Field Street, Dallas
  • Time Needed: 2-3 hours

The Neiman Marcus flagship is by no means the only noteworthy shopping destination in Dallas. The Galleria is also a must-visit, especially if you want to score the hottest designer styles. Hit up Louis Vuitton, Gucci, or Nordstrom for fashionable finds. Other shops focus on athleisure, cosmetics, electronics or toys.

There are many surprises within this shopping destination, including a variety of artistic installations that will stop you in your tracks. Known as the Artist Collective, this initiative strives to support local talent. After browsing the works of art, enjoy a delicious meal at one of the onsite restaurants, which run the gamut from fast food to fine dining.

The Galleria also has its own ice skating center, which has attracted its fair share of Olympians through the years. Both novices and experts are welcome here, however, and there is something truly delightful about gliding around this expansive rink. Younger children may prefer the Galleria's play area, which provides a much-needed opportunity to get those wiggles out after a long day of shopping.

4.  Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza

  • Location: 411 Elm Street, Dallas
  • Time Needed: 1-2 hours

As one of the most memorable Dallas landmarks, the Sixth Floor Museum offers a sobering, yet vital experience that everybody should witness at least once. This historic spot is best known as the former Texas School Book Depository building, where Lee Harvey Oswald famously perched as he awaited the appearance of President John F. Kennedy's motorcade.

Today, the former depository building doubles as an administration building and an important museum, which documents JFK's presidency, his assassination and its aftermath. While many visitors are fascinated by the circumstances surrounding his death, exhibits detailing Civil Rights and the Cold War are arguably even more intriguing. The museum relies on a timed entry system, so book your ticket well in advance and set aside plenty of time to explore at your own pace.

Following a highly educational museum visit, feel free to take a stroll through Dealey Plaza, which has a strong reputation that extends beyond the tragedy of JFK's assassination. Often referred to as the "Front Door of Dallas," Dealey has been designated as a National Historic Landmark District and is frequently the site of social activism, along with quieter moments of self-reflection.

5.  Perot Museum of Nature and Science

  • Location: 2201 North Field Street, Dallas
  • Time Needed: 3-4 hours

Enjoy a truly entertaining learning experience at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science, which has a strong reputation in Dallas and beyond. This sizable museum offers plenty to keep you and your loved ones entertained for hours.

Rotating exhibits ensure that there is always something new and interesting to explore. The permanent exhibits are also impressive and even return visitors may want to take a second look. The Rose Hall of Birds, for example, pays homage to the avian world with interactive build-a-bird and scavenger hunt experiences. Nearby, the Being Human Hall dives into the wonders of the human body.

This is only the beginning, with other exhibits taking an in-depth look at engineering, athletics and more. Families with little tykes will be pleased to find a children's area designed to delight the under-5 crowd. This is a preschooler or toddler's dream come true, complete with imaginative displays and even live critters.

6.  Nasher Sculpture Center

  • Location: 2001 Flora Street, Dallas
  • Time Needed: 1-2 hours

The artistic community is thriving in Dallas, where a variety of museums and galleries encourage the public to broaden their horizons and discover new perspectives. This effort takes on a larger-than-life appeal at the Nasher Sculpture Center, where artistic exploration is uniquely exciting even for those who typically avoid art museums.

There are plenty of indoor exhibits, but the outdoor sculpture collection is where Nasher really shines. These are truly thought-provoking and many are surprisingly interactive. As such, Nasher provides the perfect opportunity to expose youngsters to the visual arts or even get them to flex their own artistic muscles. The sculpture center is located within a short walk of several live performance venues, so it's easy to plan a day of exposure to several forms of artistic expression.

7.  Dallas Zoo

  • Location: 650 S R.L. Thornton Freeway, Dallas
  • Time Needed: 3-4 hours

Perfect for a day out with the kids, the Dallas Zoo offers classic family fun and a chance to observe a variety of fascinating creatures. As the largest zoo in Texas, this longtime favorite has a lot to offer. Little ones adore the carousel and the beautifully-decorated mini-train. There is also a virtual reality experience that provides the unique chance to observe the hard work of primatologists in the Rwandan mountains.

Chats with the zoologists are always informative, but these experts really shine during the Wonders of the Wild show, when they introduce human visitors to penguins, hornbills and many other amazing birds. The Wild Encounters Stage offers a chance to get up close and personal while learning about porcupines and reptiles.

Of course, the best zoo experiences are often quite simple: wandering around the well-maintained walkways and viewing animals in their beautifully designed habitats. Giraffes, elephants, hippos and penguins...all the usual favorite zoo animals can be found, along with a few species you won't encounter just anywhere. There are even animatronic dinosaurs, plus structures that allow rambunctious kids to climb to their heart's delight.

8.  AT&T Stadium

  • Location: 1 AT&T Way, Arlington
  • Time Needed: 1-2 hours for tours, 3 hours for Cowboys game

The Dallas Cowboys are considered by many as a national treasure, as are their beloved cheerleaders. Both call AT&T Stadium home and, if you somehow manage to score tickets to a game, you are in for the athletic showcase of a lifetime. The game day atmosphere is truly energizing and, even if you're not a Cowboys fan, you will find yourself drawn into the undeniable allure of this famed franchise.

The world-class stadium is one of the most expensive sporting facilities ever built, but from the spectator's standpoint, this investment has more than paid off. The vast video display immediately draws the eye, although the view is remarkable from seats throughout the venue. Be sure to check out the tailgating culture, as this sets the tone for an unforgettable spectating experience.

Not planning on visiting during football season? Not a problem — throughout the year, AT&T Stadium hosts many other larger-than-life events, including the best and most memorable concerts in the entire Metroplex. If you're a hardcore football fan, you can still ooh and ahh at the stadium without attending a concert; book a guided tour to get an insider's look at what goes into game-day greatness.

9.  Reunion Tower

  • Location: 300 Reunion Boulevard East, Dallas
  • Time Needed: 1 hour

Enjoy stunning views of Dallas and beyond as you gaze at the Metroplex from the amazing vantage point of the Reunion Tower. The experience centers around the remarkable GeO-Deck, where you can take in 360-degree panoramic views and try to pinpoint the city's most noteworthy landmarks from a new vantage point. This is worth checking out any time of day but is especially impressive at night, when the city comes alive with twinkling lights.

While you're at the Reunion Tower, hit up Crown Block for a decadent meal and a hand-crafted cocktail. You will have plenty of time to continue gazing in awe at the city's awe-inspiring skyline. Crown Block is also known for its delectable steaks, although many visitors gravitate towards the sushi menu or even brunch opportunities.

If you're planning a date night, try the Love Is In the Air experience, which adds sparkling wine and VIP elevator service to an already remarkable visit. The tower even accommodates elopements and small wedding ceremonies, although any excursion can be romantic.

10.Six Flags Over Texas

  • Location: 2201 Road to Six Flags, Arlington
  • Time Needed: Set aside a full day

While it's technically located in Arlington, Six Flags Over Texas is widely regarded as one of the top attractions in Dallas. This acclaimed roller-coaster park offers thrills for visitors of all ages and is easily accessible from all corners of the Metroplex. A variety of superhero-inspired rides bring the spirit of Gotham City to the heart of Texas, while the Bugs Bunny Boomtown area is a delight for kids and kids at heart.

If you want a remarkable view to accompany major thrills, get in line for the Titan (the tallest coaster in Texas), the 400-foot SkyScreamer or the 325-foot Superman Power of Tower. For classic fun, take the Six Flags Railroad or ride the Silver Star Carousel, which was built in 1928 but came to Six Flags in 1963.

Entertainment abounds at Six Flags Over Texas, where live performances promise to delight all types of visitors. This is a great way to take a break from roller-coasters or to observe local talent. Don't forget to grab photos with Looney Tunes mascots, who love to hang out at Bugs Bunny Boomtown.
