There's a lot to love about Houston's vibrant, cosmopolitan environment. At times, however, you may crave a break from the excitement of the city. This to some extent, can be found in urban green spaces; however, there's nothing quite like a relaxing trip to the lake.

Unfortunately, lakes aren’t abundant in the heart of Houston; you will need to travel a bit to enjoy a serene lakeside experience. Luckily, there are several within driving distance of the city. These can be a bit confusing for visitors to navigate, as not all lakes provide public access.

To clear up the confusion, below we highlight not only the best lakes near Houston, but also provide insight into public parks, beaches and other ways to make the most of these gorgeous bodies of water. You'll learn how you can enjoy the 11 best lakes near Houston and which activities make lake life the most memorable.

  • Go for: Lake scenery near downtown

If you adore lake-based scenery but prefer to stick around the downtown district, you'll want to head for the city's iconic Hermann Park. Home to Houston's finest gardens, museums and the vast Houston Zoo, this park also boasts a stunning body of water: McGovern Lake. Multiple paths and plazas offer views of the lake and you can even explore the nearby McGovern Island.

Although it doesn't qualify as a lake, the Mary Gibbs and Jesse H. Jones Reflection Pool is also worth visiting. This is a wonderfully serene setting, surrounded by sculpted stones and mature oak trees. A short walk from the reflection pool will take you to the awe-inspiring Sam Houston Monument.

2. Northshore Park on Lake Woodlands

  • Address: 2505 Lake Woodlands Drive, The Woodlands, Texas
  • Go for: A remote, hidden gem

Enjoy a leisurely day by the lake at one of the most underrated parks in the Houston area. In under an hour, you can reach The Woodlands, which, although well-known for its lovely waterway, is also home to a sizable freshwater lake. Various hotels, restaurants and even band shells overlook this lake, but the most relaxing lakeside experience can be found at the lovely Northshore Park.

Simple, but appealing, this is a great place to enjoy a picnic. Kids will find plenty of reasons to enjoy this location, as it offers a playground and plenty of open space for flying kites. Kayaking is also an excellent option and, in addition to seeing lots of ducks, you'll spot ibis, geese and even sandpipers. Depending on when you visit, you can even enjoy live music as part of The Woodlands' Concerts in the Park series.

Other favorite lake-based activities include canoeing and kayaking. If you enjoy hiking, you will appreciate the remarkable scenery and the peaceful atmosphere of the Pond Loop Trail, which meanders past over two dozen hatchery ponds. Be sure to climb the John Jacob Observation Tower to enjoy a view like no other.

Its lake may be small, but Lake Houston Wilderness Park is worth visiting for its serene woodland setting and its spectacular hiking trails. Fishing is always an option for making the most of the water-based experience. If you're willing to move beyond the lake, you can also play in the creek.

Don't forget to stop by the nature center, where you'll find plenty of exhibits that introduce you to the local wildlife. Camping is encouraged (with comfortable cabins also available), but you can also make the most of this lakeside environment during a delightful day trip.

Spend an idyllic day at one of the Pineywood region's most beautiful destinations: Lake Livingston State Park. This is a hot spot among local anglers, who are continually impressed by the white bass, although catfish and perch can also be found here. A long day of fishing can be delightful, but the pier is also set up for nighttime fishing excursions.

Fishing is by no means the only worthwhile activity; this park boasts excellent hiking trails and birdwatching opportunities. A sizable wooden tower overlooks the swimming area, so you can enjoy amazing views even if you don't feel like hiking.

You can immerse yourself in the serenity of this forest environment during a quaint camping trip — but as with Lake Houston, this experience is doable as a day trip.

There are many ways to take in the beauty of the Double Lake area, including a lengthy mountain bike trail that extends around the lake. Swimming is encouraged and fishing is also enjoyable, with top catches including bass and catfish. The absolute best views are enjoyed while hiking; however, the Lone Star Hiking Trail offers the ultimate opportunity to keep active as you take in the amazing views.

9. Prien Lake Park

If you're interested in exploring Louisiana and also want to spend some time by the lake, you may discover that some Louisiana spots are just as gorgeous as Houston's nicest lakes. Yes, you'll need to drive a bit further, but you can build your lakeside escape into a journey like no other: a remarkable drive along the Creole Nature Trail All-American Road. You'll encounter not only the quaint beauty of Prien Lake, but also Gulf views and spectacular beaches.

Even without the official scenic drive, Prien Lake Park is worth a visit for its sunset views. Kids love the playground and splash pad, while anglers go out of their way to discover this lake's spectacular fishing. Kayaking can also be a delight, with plenty of tours and rentals available.

  • Address: 300 West Davis St., Conroe, TX 77301
  • Go for: A complete outdoor adventure

Located about an hour north of Houston, Lake Conroe is certainly worth the trip. It’s the ideal location for water sports, whether you enjoy boating, fishing, water skiing or other excursions. This 22,000-acre lake has 157 miles of shoreline and there are plenty of quiet spots throughout those areas. Rent a boat to explore it all or go for a guided boat trip to learn about the area’s hidden treasures. One of the nice things about this area is that there are commercial amenities nearby to teach you any skill you desire, even water skiing or boating, but it's still rather remote and relaxing.

Numerous food options exist here, including Conroe Lake House and the Boathouse Bar & Lounge. You can rent a canoe, kayak or virtually any other vehicle, learn how to use it and spend the day on the water. Swimming is encouraged, too. The city of Conroe, Texas, has plenty of hotels, shops and restaurants to enjoy near the waterfront. You'll find something for everyone within a short drive.

11. Lake Raven in Huntsville State Park

  • Address: 565 Park Road 40 West, Huntsville, TX 77340
  • Go for: A fantastic nature excursion for kids

Lake Raven sits within the 2,083-acre Huntsville State Park, about an hour north of Houston. This location is fantastic for those who want to encourage kids to learn about nature hands-on. There are 21 miles of trails, many of which are shorter and wooded to keep the sun at bay. There are playgrounds, a bird blind and a beautiful nature center to explore. Teach the kids the thrill of geocaching or simply sit and watch nature everywhere. Wrap up the day with a visit to Gator Junction, a small shop with the perfect cold drinks, ice and ice cream.

You can rent a kayak near the Raven Lodge, swim in the designated areas and fish for your favorites, whether that’s perch or bass. There’s a boat house available, as well as fish cleaning stations. Make it an easy overnight trip by staying at one of the 160 campsites in the area. There are also several shelters with amenities located nearby if you're looking for a bit more support. On the other hand, hotels are within a short drive. Since it's only an hour or so away, you can make this a day trip, but a weekend getaway exploring nature may be even better.
