Best Caribbean Cruise Destinations and Travel Tips

AAA Travel Editor, Sherry Mims

Love convenience but crave new places to go and flexibility? A trip on one of the best Caribbean cruise lines might be just what the doctor (or your PTO) ordered. With so many places to see and the versatility of cruising, it’s no wonder more people than ever are deciding to set sail. Plus, there are so many things to do on a cruise that it’s hard to know where to start. Cruise options run the gamut — from all-inclusive romantic luxury to budget-friendly, multigenerational group travel. Cruise vacations also can be a quick way to experience that international trip you wanted yet save time and money.

Then there’s the all-inclusive cruise element. When it comes to cruising, "all-inclusive" offers a seamless travel experience, bundling everything from complimentary meals to entertainment and activities into one price. An all-inclusive Caribbean cruise means less planning and budgeting on your part, allowing you to enjoy convenience and peace of mind.

Because of cruise's versatility, however, you’ll have to do some extra leg work before your trip and refine — whether by cruise line, port or another must-have. Need help? AAA can help you choose a cruise line for the perfect trip in 2025. You can filter trips by cruise line, destination or time of year — or even provide tips if you're a first-time cruise traveler who's unsure what to ask when picking a cruise.

Recipe for the Perfect Caribbean Cruise

AAA’s Scott Campbell, Manager, Cruise Relations, suggests keeping these additional cruise questions to build your perfect cruise vacation:

  • Destination: Western or Eastern Caribbean?
  • Duration: Most first-time cruisers opt for a seven-night cruise, but durations can range from 3- to 14-night cruises or longer.
  • Ship Type: Are you looking for a large vessel with numerous amenities or a smaller ship offering a higher level of service and access to smaller ports?
  • Accommodations: Do you prefer a stateroom with a window, a private balcony or a suite?
  • Budget: How much are you willing to spend?
  • Arrival Time: If flying to the port, consider arriving at least one night before departure to avoid potential air travel delays.
  • Activities: Book shore excursions in advance to ensure you don't miss out on unforgettable experiences like swimming with dolphins or sunset cruises.

AAA wants you to have a memorable experience for whatever reason you travel and so will only mention Caribbean cruise lines preferred or recommended by AAA.

When to Go and Why Choose a Caribbean Cruise?

Consider the cruise ship; it's essentially a floating resort, sailing to your favorite places to go with ease. Each destination offers attractions where one can delve into the Caribbean history and culture. You have the chance to learn about the people and places as well as try a range of cuisines and frosty libations.

However, timing is everything. Each season brings its own charm and challenges for Caribbean cruises. Summer tends to be sunny but crowded. And remember, the Caribbean hurricane season runs from June to November, but since your cruise ship is a floating resort, it can move to avoid the storm, unlike a land-based resort. You will just need to be flexible to potential itinerary changes. Conversely, the period from January to March, known as the "Wave season," sees cruise lines offering enticing deals and winter escapes. The most extensive range of dates and itineraries are available from December to April, making this period a favorite among cruisers. Yet, the Caribbean's tropical climate ensures it remains an appealing destination throughout the year, despite heat and humidity.

Cruise lines like Royal Caribbean, Princess and Carnival operate year-round and are particularly popular, boasting large ships with diverse amenities that cater to all ages and seasons. However, it's important to note that while some lines operate all year, others follow seasonal schedules.

Cruise Vacation Planning: Popular Cruising Trends

Although there's something to be said for splurging on a special occasion, such as a honeymoon cruise to the Caribbean, cruises are for everyone. Cruising offers an array of tailored experiences to meet every traveler's needs and expectations, but some are more popular than others.

According to Aixa Diaz, AAA media relations manager, current cruising trends lean towards smaller ships, solo trips and splurge-worthy suites. First-time cruisers can indulge in a variety of amenities on board, from expansive dining options to a wealth of entertainment choices. Families can enjoy comprehensive kids' programs, while those seeking adventure or relaxation have activities ranging from running tracks to climbing walls. For the seasoned cruiser, luxury suites and balcony cabins are selling out faster than ever, indicating a willingness to splurge on luxury voyages.

But remember: Planning is key to getting the most out of your Caribbean cruise, and the sooner you book the better. An increasing number of cruise enthusiasts are booking in advance — even more than a year ahead — to get the cabins, itineraries and options they want.

Popular U.S. Domestic Cruise Ports

Are you yearning for a holiday that offers a variety of experiences and destinations without the stress of managing luggage or constant travel? Enjoy the ease of driving to your departure destination, avoiding the hassle and possibility of flight delays that come with air travel.

Caribbean cruises provide the freedom you need with departures from major U.S. ports like New York; Baltimore, Maryland; Charleston, South Carolina; Mobile Alabama; and several popular Florida ports, including Jacksonville.

Florida’s Miami, Tampa and Fort Lauderdale — with the popularity of cruises departing from Fort Lauderdale rising from last year — are the most popular domestic cruise ports in Florida, according to AAA Travel's trends.

"Overall, there’s a 28% increase in domestic cruise bookings and 7% increase in international cruises compared to 2023," AAA's Diaz says.

Most Common International Ports on a Caribbean Cruise

You’re in for a treat when it comes to Caribbean cruise ports. The Caribbean offers amazing excursions, whether you're sailing with family-friendly lines like Disney and Carnival or looking for a more sophisticated experience with Celebrity and Princess.

For first-time cruisers, seven-night cruises to bustling Western Caribbean cruise ports or serene Eastern Caribbean destinations make an excellent start. For those willing to explore farther, 10-night cruises to Southern Caribbean locations such as Barbados, St. Lucia, and Aruba are also accessible, albeit less common.

Look for cruise lines with ports that cater to your interests and preferences. After all, there’s a Caribbean island for every type of traveler. Eastern Caribbean ports in the Bahamas (especially Nassau); Philipsburg, St. Marten; and St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands are renowned for their beaches, markets and landmarks. These are places where you can immerse yourself in the Caribbean's history, culture and natural beauty.

On the other hand, Western Caribbean ports such as Cozumel, Mexico; Grand Cayman in the Cayman Islands; and Ocho Rios, Jamaica, are equally enticing, offering an exciting blend of adventure and R&R. Here, you can explore ancient Maya or Aztec ruins, dive into crystal-clear waters teeming with marine life or simply bask in the sun on sandy white beaches. The bucket-list urgency to experience these diverse landscapes and cultural treasures is real.

Packing Tips for First-time Cruisers

Before packing for your Caribbean cruise, keep in mind the warm weather and the things you intend to do. Pack light clothing, swimwear, and reef-safe sunscreen for beach and poolside relaxing. Remember to wear comfortable shoes when visiting ports, and should you wish to participate, dress to impress for formal dinner nights on board. That might mean a dress, or trousers and a collared shirt or blouse. Each cruise line may have its own dress code, so make sure to check ahead of time.

Travel with AAA: From Trip Inspiration to Passports and Cruise Insurance

Now that you have Caribbean cruise basics covered, there also are some logistics to keep in mind. If you're an American booking a Caribbean cruise, you might wonder whether you need a passport. While it is strongly advised to bring a passport, it is not technically required on closed-loop cruises, which begin and end at the same American port (Think Miami to Cozumel, Mexico, and back.) However, you will need a valid passport to disembark and visit those countries if your schedule involves certain islands, such as St. Barts or Trinidad and Tobago.

Make it easier on yourself by consulting with knowledgeable sources, such as a AAA Travel Agent, who can provide expert advice and personalized service. They can answer common questions ranging from what muster drills are to should you buy cruise insurance. Some, who are Certified Autism Travel Professionals, can help with autism-friendly trip planning. As professionals well-versed in travel trends and a love for travel, travel agents are happy to share their favorite cruises and travel tips.

To receive the best perks, cabins and itineraries, it's imperative to finalize your Caribbean cruise decisions in advance to get what you want. Remember, the perfect Caribbean cruise is just a consultation and booking away.
