AAA Travel Editor, Sherry Mims

For many visitors to Cancun, choosing the best all-inclusive resort is about convenience — staying near sunbathing, waterfront recreation and amenities — complete with all the hassle-free service and offerings that all-inclusive packages provide. Or you could, like me, might be visiting an all-inclusive with a group and wondering about packages and what to do. Another person, a woman I met traveling alone at the resort, had her own questions about resort life. Whatever your reason, you'll find this article is intended to bridge the gap — helping you to find the best all-inclusive resorts in Cancun, of course, but also giving you the lay of the land and tips to build a trip that meets or exceeds your Cancun dreams.

Where to stay in Cancun

Because it is such a storied spring break destination as well as a AAA top destination, you'll find beautiful Cancun beaches and dozens of great resorts that feature all-inclusive packages, which makes picking a place to stay in this popular Mexican destination so daunting. For example, take this list of popular resort areas in Cancun:

  • Downtown/El Centro
  • Playa El Centro (Isla Mujeres)
  • Costa Mujeres (aka Playa Mujeres)
  • Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera)/North Cancun

That's a lot of Cancun resorts to sort through! Luckily, this beloved city in Mexico is well-traveled by AAA. You'll get an inside look at the best all-inclusive resorts in Cancun, based on personal experiences and insights from experts, such as AAA Inspector 511, whose favorites include Planet Hollywood, Grand Palladium and TRS Coral, Moon Palace as well as AAA Five Diamonds Le Blanc and non-all-inclusive NIZUC Resort & Spa.

Follow along to learn what questions to ask before you go, best practices and, and of course, details on the best all-inclusive resorts in Cancun.

This Cancun property also made my list of Best All-Inclusive Resorts for Families, because you get to be the star. In addition to a separate outdoor seating area and plenty of storage space, rooms come with high-end amenities, including illuminated vanity mirrors. A state-of-the-art fitness center and a variety of indoor and outdoor classes, such as yoga and "Pool Zumba," are said to be "designed to keep your physique screen-worthy and ready for anything." Understandably, AAA Inspector 511 also names it as a favorite:

Hard Rock Hotel Cancun

  • Designation: AAA Four Diamond

Another one of my picks for "Best All-Inclusive Resorts for Families," this all-inclusive resort with a guitar-shaped driveway has waterfront accommodations with balconies. Despite the raucous rock 'n' roll theme, this one has a great kids' club and fun things to do for kids. While you lounge by the pool or try the resort's attractions, kids can have fun at the customized program. Diverse dining options satisfy even the pickiest eaters, making mealtime a breeze.

All-Inclusive Resorts in Cancun for All Ages

At the Grand Palladium, you'll enjoy roomy accommodations. The resort also has a relaxing spa, an exercise facility and entertainment that culminates in a digital projection display on the water in the evening. Here's what AAA Inspector 511 likes about the resort, which is one of his favorites:

This Inspector Pick is located between two popular swimming zones and is only a short walk from local shops and nightlife. The resort welcomes guests of all ages, although the suites in the Turquoize section are only available to couples and solo travelers over the age of 18. Units are large, with high-end details. Bonus, it's the only all-inclusive resort in the area that has an on-site brewpub. There's also a sweet shop where you can manufacture cotton candy and enjoy a chocolate fountain.

Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets

  • Designation: AAA Four Diamond
  • Awarded: Inspector’s Best of Location
  • AAA Member Benefit: AAA/CAA members save 10% and earn World of Hyatt points!

One of the most recent on the island, Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets boasts a beautiful oceanfront setting with plenty of luxurious accommodations and modern conveniences. Although this one is not technically in Cancun, Isla Mujeres is only 20 minutes away by ferry and a popular excursion from Cancun. According to AAA Inspector 511:

"Isla is beautiful with an oceanside hiking area, a sea turtle sanctuary and a cute little downtown shopping area. Everyone rents golf carts to drive around, and it's quite a fun day trip."

Moon Palace The Grand Cancun

  • Designation: AAA Four Diamond
  • Awarded: Inspector’s Best of Personal Favorite; Inspector's Best of Inspected Clean

Though it's a trek from the airport, a stay at this beautiful all-ages resort — complete with luxurious public spaces and lighting — offers something for everyone. Enjoy the world-class spa as your family enjoys a variety of fun things to do. Highlights include playing a round of golf on the Jack Nicklaus-designed course, catching the perfect wave on a surfing simulator or simply unwinding in your room; large balconies and plush bedding await. It's also a favorite of Inspector 511:

"Moon Palace is... an enormous property. They have a golf course, convention space, a water park, tons of shopping and dining and the spa at The Grand is undoubtedly the most impressive spa I have seen anywhere in my 15 years of inspecting."

Villa del Palmar Cancun Luxury Beach Resort & Spa

  • Designation: AAA Four Diamond on Playa Mujeres
  • Awarded: Inspector’s Best of Inspected Clean

This independent all-inclusive resort is right on Playa Mujeres. Cancun International Airport is 16.8 miles (27 km) away, while the El Meco Archaeological Site is 1.9 miles (3 km) away from the resort. It's also the perfect locale for the view; many rooms overlook the Caribbean. There are lots of daily events for families and couples to enjoy. You'll find laundry machines, Murphy beds and jetted tubs in some of the rooms, while hammocks are on the patios of all of them.

Frequently Asked Questions about Cancun All-Inclusives

Resorts in Cancun are famously self-contained, so you might never leave the resort unless you're motivated. If you're working with a travel agent or planning a trip on your own, here are 10 questions to consider asking about all-inclusive resorts in Cancun.

  1. Is Cancun safe? While there are U.S. State Department travel advisories for certain areas in Mexico, Cancun is considered to be relatively safe for visitors. If you're staying in resorts in the Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera) or the Costa Mujeres section of Cancun, you'll pass a junglelike area and security checkpoints — in short, secluded — unless you're taking an excursion. However, it's still a good idea to use reasonable precautions and avoid unnecessary risks.
  2. Do you need to know Spanish? As AAA Inspector 511 told me, "No Spanish will be required to interact with the staff," and he was right. Everyone I needed to interact with spoke English well, but I think it's a good idea to know basic phrases, such as por favor (please) and gracias (thank you) to be polite. You'll also find English spoken in many businesses in Downtown Cancun, including shops, restaurants and well-known Cancun attractions like Coco Bongo.
  3. Can you drink the water? Most water that you're getting in the restaurants has been filtered, but maybe your room water isn't. Drink from bottles provided for you in the room. (Soda and alcohol may also be provided.)
  4. What's included? You'll want to research what's included in an all-inclusive package in Cancun. Is all entertainment on-site, or would resorts in the same brand provide a shuttle to sister property's offerings, such as the Riu Resorts? Most all-inclusive resorts boast all-you-can-eat meals, but find out whether that's all restaurants nearby or what all-inclusive means for drinks (alcoholic and nonalcoholic) and recreation. (Is scuba gear covered?) Specifics can vary significantly from one resort to another.
  5. What's the quality of beaches and accessibility? With Cancun's reputation for stunning beaches, you'll be keen to know about the quality of the beachfront at the resort, including how accessible and private these beaches are. Day passes may be an option if you like one beach over another or want to invite a local friend to visit.
  6. What about sargassum season? Sargassum season is that time of year when brown seaweed (an algae variety known as sargasso or sargazo) floats and litters the shoreline — from late winter through fall, with April through June considered peak. Though the municipalities and even the Mexican Navy work to observe and contain it, you may want to ask your resort if they use beach-cleaning equipment, such as Hyatt Zilara Cancun. (You may see a tractor on your early morning walks.) The seaweed also seems less frequent and in smaller amounts in the Costa Mujeres section, according to Inspector 511.
  7. What are the dining options? Food is a huge part of the all-inclusive experience but can be hit or miss, depending on where you go, so you'll want to ask about both the quantity and quality of restaurants, especially specialty dining. AAA Inspector 511 recommends asking if any restaurants at your Cancun resort require reservations, and then set them up early (or upon arrival). Some on-site restaurants may only be open at certain times like for breakfast or a late-night snack (as in my resort).
  8. What type of accommodations are available? Comfort and luxury levels can greatly influence the decision-making process. Is it family-friendly, or can you expect age restrictions?
  9. What are the activities and entertainment? Ask about whether your all-inclusive Cancun resort offers options for families, couples or solo travelers. Are there adult-only pools, or will you need to make a reservation to visit a private pool in the spa? Will you have to travel to a sister property, or is all entertainment on-site? You also may be able to travel between properties, such as adults-only TRS Coral guests being welcomed at family-oriented Grand Palladium.
  10. What season do you want to go or avoid? The dry season, December–April, is Cancun's peak, including spring break. June begins a wetter time of year, and hurricane season is June 1 through November 30, with August to October being riskier periods.

Pick a Cancun Resort with AAA

Where to stay in Cancun will depend on your vacation goals and whether you want the complete offerings of an all-inclusive resort, where you don't even have to leave the property for fun. You'll find everything you need on-site, even a doctor. However, there are things to consider and even differences between related properties. While admittedly there are a lot of places to stay, the all-inclusive resorts we picked are all AAA Diamond-designated properties, and all of these AAA Diamonds have earned additional recognition as AAA Inspector Picks.

So now, it's time for some fun. All you need to do is choose when to go to Cancun and make the most of your all-inclusive vacation!
