San Juan National Forest

The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad passes through the spectacular canyon of the Rio de Las Animas.

The area around Durango is popular for winter sports; McPhee Reservoir, Vallecito Reservoir, Lemon Reservoir and Williams Creek Reservoir are summer recreation sites. Hunting and fishing are permitted in season. Saddle and pack trips can be made into such backcountry areas as the Lizard Head, South San Juan and Weminuche wildernesses. The San Juan Skyway offers 232 miles of scenic driving through the San Juan and Uncompahgre national forests.
