Some 200 wineries make this area one of California's fastest growing wine-producing regions. Lakes Nacimiento and San Antonio, northwest of town, offer boating, camping, fishing and water skiing. From Paso Robles, scenic SR 46 heads west to SR 1 and the coastal communities of San Simeon and Morro Bay. Twenty-five miles east of Paso Robles on SR 46 is Cholame, the small town where motion-picture legend James Dean died in an automobile accident; a stainless steel monument is beside the road.
