Wheat continues to be the region's principal crop, sustained in part by the Wheatland Irrigation Project, one of the largest privately owned enterprises of its type in the country. Wheatland also is the home of a white marble quarrying business and Laramie River Power Station, which supplies electric power to Wyoming and six neighboring states.
Recreational opportunities include camping and winter sports in nearby Medicine Bow National Forest. Grayrocks Reservoir, 16 miles northeast, is stocked with game fish and offers boating.
