Sturgeon Bay processes the ruby yield of Door County's cherry orchards. Some 2,200 acres of cherry trees produce from 8 to 14 million pounds of fruit annually. The trees bloom in mid-May, carpeting the peninsula in blossoms; harvest occurs from mid-July to early August.
During the annual chinook salmon spawning run each fall, as many as 500 anglers attack the waters daily in Sturgeon Bay Harbor in search of the 20- to 40-pound fish. Abundant winter recreation opportunities are available, including cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.
On the shore of Sturgeon Bay, Potawatomi State Parkoffers 9 miles of hiking trails, 8 miles of mountain biking trails and more than 8 miles of groomed ski trails and snowmobile trails. Visitors can take in scenic views of Sawyer Harbor from the park's 75-foot-tall observation tower; phone (920) 746-2890.
