From the mid-19th to the early 20th century, Marinette and neighboring Menominee, Mich. experienced a lumber boom, relying on the area's abundance of white pine. Dozens of lumber mills lined both sides of the Menominee River, which separates Wisconsin and Michigan; sawmills, lumber mills and door factories employed thousands of woodsmen, sawyers and scalers.
Marinette is the gateway to Marinette County, which encompasses 250 lakes, 50 trout streams and 14 waterfalls.
