Burlington has long been noted as the home of the Burlington Liars' Club, an organization that encourages contributors from around the world to tell tall tales in the classic country manner, a tradition it has sustained since 1929 when the first competition gained national attention. Each year scores of tall-tale tellers vie for first place, and the winner is announced each New Year's Eve. Visitors can explore the “Tall Tale Trail,” a trail through town featuring tall tales on bronze plaques at various businesses.
Another popular Burlington attraction is the dramatic offerings of the Haylofters—one of the oldest community theater groups in Wisconsin—presented from May through October at Malt House Theatre, 109 N. Main St.; phone (262) 763-9873. Free water-skiing performances by the Aquaducks are offered at Fischer Park, 30326 Durand Ave., on Browns Lake Thursday at 6:30, Memorial Day through Labor Day.
