Summersville

US 19, a 45-mile scenic highway linking I-79 at Sutton and the West Virginia Turnpike at Bradley, passes Summersville near Summersville Lake. The lake is West Virginia's largest with 60 miles of shoreline and more than 2,800 acres of water. Summersville Lake State Park, 62 Farmhouse Ln., offers swimming, fishing, hiking, camping, scuba diving and snorkeling, and picnicking opportunities. Summersville serves as the county seat for Nicholas County.

The Gauley River National Recreation Area, between Summersville and Swiss, protects 25 miles of the Gauley River and 6 miles of its tributary, the Meadow River. The Gauley is known for its rapids, white-water rafting and fishing opportunities. The recreation area can be reached from Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park or Summersville Dam off SR 129 and from SR 39. Information is available at park headquarters, P.O.
