Middlebury

Middlebury College was chartered in 1800; the present enrollment exceeds 2,500. The campus includes Painter Hall, Vermont's oldest college building, built in 1816. Emma Hart Willard, a pioneer in American women's education, began her work in 1807 when she became the principal of Middlebury Female Academy. The school plays host to the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference in summer.
