At the heart of the city is the spring-fed Comal River, a playground for inner tube riders and swimmers. The scenic River Road traverses the Hill Country through New Braunfels.
River Road, off SR 46, leads to Sattler and Canyon Dam before returning to the city via Sattler Road, Startzville and SR 46. The centerpiece of this scenic loop is the Guadalupe River Scenic Area, a popular river reserve for canoeing, inner tubing and fishing.
Another highlight is the restored late 19th-century community of Gruene and its historic district, which includes Texas' oldest dance hall as well as several general stores, antique stores, an art gallery and ethnic restaurants.
