Nearby Bear Butte, rising above the prairie, has historically been a place of spiritual renewal for Native Americans and was the founding place for several Native American religions; the area continues to serve as the site for Sioux and Cheyenne religious retreats. The National Back Country Byway east of Sturgis is a scenic self-guiding tour where visitors can view remnants of early cavalry life, including stone cavalry jumps (walls used in the training and exercising of cavalry horses), and stagecoach trails. A byway map is available at the chamber of commerce.
The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally normally begins on Monday of the first full week after the first weekend in August and continues through the following weekend. The event attracts hundreds of thousands of motorcyclists from around the world for drag races, concerts, motorcycle shows, motorcycle rodeos and poker runs.
