Sumter is one of the state's leading lumber and agricultural areas. Further bolstering the city's economy are textile mills; chemical plants; foundries; and the Palmetto Pigeon Plant, reputed to be the world's largest squab farm. Just west of Sumter is Shaw Air Force Base, home to the F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter crews.
The Sumter Iris Festival , one of the state's oldest festivals, is held over Memorial Day weekend at Swan Lake Iris Gardens to celebrate the peak blooming season.
