Pottsville also was part of northeastern Pennsylvania's anthracite coal mining region. Pottsville sports the 90-foot-high Henry Clay Monument, a memorial to the presidential candidate who supported legislation favorable to the area's coal industry. The monument, built in 1855, is said to be the nation's oldest cast-iron statue.
