DESTINATION

Ponca City

Ponca City was built in the midst of the Cherokee Strip, a narrow section of land 58 miles wide that had been reserved for the Native Americans as bison hunting grounds. President Grover Cleveland instead opened the land to settlement. When oil was discovered in 1910, E.W. Marland, who later became governor of Oklahoma, established Marland Oil, thereby propelling Ponca City into the age of industrialization.
