Charles M. Hall, an 1885 Oberlin College graduate, discovered the electrolytic process of producing aluminum the following year in his Oberlin woodshed workshop as he was working with his sister Julia. Frenchman Paul Louis Toussaint Héroult independently discovered the same process in Europe a few months later. Hall later co-founded the Aluminum Company of America, Alcoa.
